well as most private utilities.
One of the major objections
raised by the GOP was that the
bill "authorized and directed''
by the AEC to carry out the pro
gram, instead of simply giving
AEC the authority to do it. Dem
ocrats said without the word "di
rected'' it was simply "a pious
bill authorizing the commission
j to do something it doesn't want
to do. ' In short, they argued

worth and Pelly. Those who
I tried to keep the bill alive on
this vote were Holmes. Horan,
j Tollefson, Westland, Magnuson
i and Mrs. Green.

Sugathadasa abandoned an In
dian expert's suggestion for arti
ficial rain, but said he had no
objection to the proposal of Mu
nicipal Councilor Abu Bakr,
who valuntcered to find a katta
diya or soothsayer to perform
a bali or devil dancing cere
mony. "Where science failed, invok
ing the gods may succeed," he
said.
