his public cage two weeks ago
and placed in solitary in the
back room of the bird house
where he has been undergoing
a "brain-washing" by zoo
keepers who first taught him
to talk.
Upon his return after the
birdnaping, zoo director Frank
Mclnnis said Blackie inter
jected some obvious obscen
ities into his customarily
friendly chatter.
"He bagan calling people
dirty so - and - so's" Mclnnis
said. "We couldn't have him
talking to kids that way."
But Blackie's vocabulary
has improved during his con
finement. "We'll give him an
other chance soon," Mclnnis
said.

Salem (U.Rl The new Port-land-Salem
freeway was named
the R. H. Baldock freeway at a
meeting of the state highway
commission here yesterday.
Just prior to the announce
ment, the commisison appointed
W. C. (Dutch) Williams to suc
ceed Baldock, who recently re
signed as state highway engineer
after 24 years in that position.
Baldock's resignation was ac
cepted with reluctance by the
commission which named the
newt highway in his honor. Bal
dock's resignation will become
effective Aug. 1. He has accepted
an offer to head an American
highway mission to Iraq.

pay to pay a fine too fast.
Finding a parking ticket on
her automobile, she went to the
nearest police station and
plunked down a $2 fine. After it
was recorded, she asked for an
other look at the ticket. She
found it had been made out for
another car, whose driver ap
parently had place it on hers as
wife for his new post before the
end of August.
Williams is a veteran with the
highway department. He became
assistant state highway engineer
in 1947 and deputy highway en
gineer in 1935.
