As the Andrea Doria started

near when the collision occurred.
Debris gushed from the sink
ing wreckage. It looked like
crates and lifeboats.
Great bubbles mixed with a
heavy oil slick as the ship went
down, still tugged some life
boats behind her.
Ten minutes later al! we
could see was debris and oil.

Decision Pending
On Prosecution of
Miller on Contempt
Washington UR The Jus
tice Department was deciding to
day whether to prosecute play
wright Arthur Miller for con
tempt of Congress when he re
turns home from his honeymoon
in England with Marilyn Mon
roe. The House voted 373-9
Wednesday to cite Miller for
contempt because he refused to
identify for a committee on un
American activities persons with
whom he attended allegedly pro
Communist meetings in 1947.
The citation was sent to the
Justice Department which has
final say on whether or not to
prosecute Miller. The maximum
penalty for conviction on a con
tempt of Congress charge is one
year in prison and a SI. 000 fine
on each count.
Others Cited
Seven other former witnesses
before the committee also were
cited by the House. They were
Otto Nathan. New York univer
sity professor and executor of
the estate of the late Albert Ein
stein: George Tyne. New York

ment over an alleged embezzle

ed in a crash into a power pole
last week.

Winston Man Given
Penitentiary Sentence
Roscburg :U.R: Loren Dow,
42. of Winston, Ore., yesterday
was convicted of statutory as
sault and sentenced to 15 years
in the state penitentiary. He
was arrested May 15 on a charge
of assaulting his 12-year-old
daughter.
Dow, the father of one child
and stepfather of four, was sen
tenced by Judze Carl Wimberly
in circuit court here.
Psychiatric examination is re
quired of any person convicted
i ot a crime involving sex. Dow
j was given such an examination
j and held to be mentally competent.
Two Pilots Escape

serious injury yesterday when
they bailed out of a crippled T
:io jet trainer over the Fort
Lewis Reservation, south of here.
The pilots, 2nd Lt. Burl L.
Hammerquist, Eugene, Ore., and
1st Lt. Glenn D. Larson. Twin
Valley. Minn., parachuted to
safety shortly after radioing a
"May Day" distress call.
The pair, both members of the
317th Fighter Interceptor Squad
ron at MeChord Field, said in the
radio call that, a mild explosion
had occurred in the T-33.
Both men were taken to the
MeChord base hospital and were
released with "only minor in
juries." Tiie T-33 crashed in the center
of the Fort Lewis artillery firing
range.
