Political Parties
Declared Essential
Los Angeles '.j.? A Uni
versity of California political
science professor here believes
that the weakness of political or
ganizations in California have
left a vacuum which has been
filled by pressure groups.
The professor is Dr. Dean E.
McHenry who points out that
every state or nation of consid
erable size has found that polit
ical parties are essential to the
proper functioning of big de
mocracy. "However." he said, ''through
a combination of historical fac
tors and unique devices such as
cross-filing, political parties in
California have been relegated
to a meager and nominal role.
"Into the vacuum created by
the shrinking of party, the pres
sure groups have entered. Pur
poseful, well-organized, and well
financed they have thrown their
weight and influence around
J both campaigns and the legisla
ture.
