Should Tonsils Come Out? ,
A woman of 50 comes in to
tell me that she has been having
i some fore throat, especially in
winter months,
and now a
physician
wants to re
move her ton
sils. Her good
old family doc
tor says. "No."
He sees no
sense in it.
Naturally, the
woman is puz-

.led. She wonders if anything
serious wiil happen if she doesn't
have her tonsils out, or if some
thing will go wrong in her throat
if she does accept the operation.
All I can tell her is that a
number of persons, including
myself, have made statistical
studies of hundreds or thousands
of persons usually children
who have had their tonsils re
moved. We have tried to see why
some of the persons aot good re
sults while many of them did
not get any results.

have made these statistical
studies have come to the con

care of my invalid brother.

to warn me that I could drop
dead at any moment.
Mrs. K. M. I am terribly
worried about my brother who
recently had a serious heart at
tack. His wife has always been
sort of light-headed, and I don't
think she can take care of him
properly. Meals have always
been irregular in her home. If
she feels like watching TV all
night and sleeping half of the
next day, she does so. My broth
er is a good-natured fool and
gives the children their break
fast the next day.
The doctor says Frank can
have some light exercise so she
lets him go shopping for her.
When I told her I didn't think
Frank should be allowed to car
ry anything, she turned on me
and said she loves Frank more
than I do and what do I mean
by meddling, etc. . . .
I want Frank to come and
live with me so I can take good
care of him until he is stronger.
This he refuses to do. I want
him to know what it's like to
live in a well-ordered home and
to be waited on the way a con
valescent should be, but he just
says he's getting along well
enough. I think it's just pride
that stops him. How can I make
him understand that for his life's
sake he should come to me?
Frank J. It's true that my
wife is not a very good house
keeper and she has some odd
ways, according to my sister's
standards, but in spite of what
my sister thinks, my wife has
been a good nurse. She follows
the doctor's orders, never lets
me forget my medicines and
such things. I am very much
aware of my condition and
would never carry anything too
heavy for me. but my sister gets
hysterical if I make a move
and incidentally, this is true of
half my relatives and friends.
Nobody hestitates to warn me
that I could drop dead at any
moment and that so-and-so died
No Further Legal
Action in Lane Case
Salem 'U.R) Gov. Elmo Smith
has in formed Lane county Dis
trict Attorney Eugene Venn
that he had been informed by the
attorney general that no further
legal action could be taken in
the Lane county grand jury in
vestigation. Venn had asked the governor
for a status report on the probe
and the governor in turn had re
quested an opinion from Attor
ney General Robert Y. Thornton.
The governor quoted Thornton
as saying: "It is my opinion that
this office has completely dis
charged its legal duties in this
matter under your directives.
Unless the district attorney has
obtained some new evidence to
offer, it appears to me that there
is nothing further that either you
or I can legally do'."

clusion that the essential thing
is not the size of the tonsils or
what they look like but how
often they get inflamed. If a per
son hai repeated sore throat with
inflammation of the tonsils, then
these nodules of tissue had better
come out. In my series of several
hundred cases in adults. I found
that when the person rarely had
a sore throat he seldom got any
thing out of his tonsillectomy.
He was no different after it than
he was before. As everyone
knows, a tonsillectomy is most
likely to help a child; it seldom
is of much value to an adult. For
years, physicians thought that
the removal of tonsils would cure
arthritis, but gradually they
came to see that this operation
rarely helps persons with either
the rheumatoid or the senescent
types of arthritis, which are so
common and so disabling.
There is some evidence to in
dicate that the tonsilar tissue
was placed in our throats for a
purpose to help in protecting
us from infection, and hence it
it unwise to remove tonsils that
are not causing disease or dis
comfort. last week while picking up a
peanut from a dish. I don't want
to be waited on hand-and-foot
like an invalid and I don't
see anything so terrible about
my getting breakfast for my
own kids occasionally.
THE COUNCIL: Too many
people are ready to play person
al medical adviser to anyone
who has had a heart attack or
any other serious illness. They
usually overlook the fact that the
patient has been scared half out
of his wits, wouldn't endanger
himself if he could possibly help
it, and would like to forget about
his condition occasionally.
Frank's sister means well and
is terribly concerned about his
condition, but the tension and
anxiety she shows are not all
what he needs.
What his wife lacks as a house
keeper, she probably more than
makes up for as a companion.
She apparently lets her instincts
instead of her will govern her
conduct to a large extent and
the sister-in-law has by no means
shown that those instincts are
bad certainly they are better
than the instinct which prompts
Mrs. K. M. to call her brother
a "good-natured fool."
Anyone who has had as severe
a shock as Frank has, wants to
live as normal an everyday life
as possible. This he could not
do in his sister's home, no mat
ter how well-order it is. Even if
it were just pride that kept him
from going to her home, this
well - meaning lady ought to
leave the subject alone. An in
valid is entitled to his pride as
much as anyone else and pos
sibly needs it more.
