Medford took a six-run lead
in yesterday's battle. Drain cut
the spread to 6 to 3. The Studs
added another marker and Drain
collected two counter"! in the'
concluding canto before stop- j
ping the Black Sox threat to
overtake them. I
Seventeen-year-old Jack Rrilly
out of Grant high school of Port- .
land is a promising young'
pitcher hut over two innings
yesterday the Cheney Studs
found his tosses much to their
liking. In the second inning,
after Der.ild W'ooton drew a
base on balls. Twink Perierson
and Bob Sclsor slapped singles.
Dick Toncy came through with
a fly double to right field and
Frank Roelandt safetied. The
Studs ran up three scores in the
frame.
Eeilly Chased
In the third Jack Cooney lined
a double to right field, stole
third base and ceme home on
Keilly's bad throw in an at
tempt to nip the steal. Wooton
then lined to left for two bases
and Pederson bounced the ball
over the left field wall for an
automatic double. That chased
Keilly to the dugout with two
runs in. Bill Croco. coming in as
reliever, gave up a hit to Sclsor
which let in another run. A
force out and flyout retired the
side.
Other Stud run was in the
seventh on Cnoney's infield rap.
Jerry Bettcnrinrf's sacrifice and
Wooton s one baser.
Sclsor hurled six hit ball for
Medford. He was touched for a
single by Cliff Girod. Drain's
first man up in the game but
yielded no other safety during
the first six innings. In the fifth
panel, however. Selsor walked
the bases full. Then two of the
three errors by the Studs allow
ed in three Sox runs. A sock by
Don Kirch got through Betten
derft at third base to aljow in

triumph Saturday night. Don '
White, backed by some good rie- ;
tensive work on the part of his
teammates, was in real diffi
culty only in two innings as he j
tossed seven hit ball for the
Studs. He fanned eight and gave
four liases on balls. !
Drain combined a walk to Ad '
Hutsrhman and singles by Norm
Weic-li ,-ind Pat Wohlers in the.
second inning for one run. In j
the eight' Bill Beard got to sec
end base on shortstop Twink
Pederson's throwing miseue. A'
two-bagger hy Xorval Richey'
brought in the marker. j
Medford pulled off two double i
plays in the tussle w ith Pedcr- j
son and second baseman doing!
some nice fielding and the Studs'
stemmed Sox threats on two oc
casions on forces that caught
runners going into third bases.
First baseman Jack Cooney, as j
he did through the series made
some sensational stretches for
putouts at his sack. Drain had
one double play in the fuss. i
No player Saturday night got
more thnn one hit Medford put
men on 'oases. leaving nine
stranded, but couldn't get the
c":ff:cier. punch to score.
He'.ser Ejected
First big argument came in
the second inning when umpire
Virgii Swanson railed a balk on
Aronson. Play was interrupted!
for seven to 10 minutes but
Swanson nrtadp his decision s'ick
and Heiser was banished from
'hp playing field and the Dram
dugout.
The other spiri'ed beef was in '
the seven' h inning with Jerry
Bettendorf of the Studs at bat j
Hp rapped a ball in'o thp infield
which was obviously fair but
:an only halfway to first base (
and haltod. Aronson threw the
ball to the sack for a putout.
But Bettendorf claimed that,
plate ump Erie Klein had yelled
foul ball on the play.
After several minutes of lively
rieha'e in which Studs swarmed
around Klein, it was decided to
let Be'tendorf go back and con
tinue batting. That brought the
Sox converging around Klein
tor hea'cd words which lasted
several minutes. Finally the
Studs' third baseman was per
mitted to bat with Drain play
ing under protest. Bettendorf
settled the issue hy striking out.
Many "long balls" were hit in
the series including a good num
ber which were flics caught
deep in the outfield.

Frank Lane, the general man

do something about his criti

Lane was exasperated because
Secory called third baseman
Boyer out at first in the fourth
inning of Sunday's game with
the Brooklyn Dodgers.
"W'hen an umpire makes a
decision like that he ought to
pay to get in to see the game,"
Lane said. "He boots one and

Secory made a bad call because
of Boycr's reaction. Boyer nor

Lane said.
It was the first time in Boycr's
career that he had been thrown
