roll is being roasted by many
grownups, but one dancing x
' pert Ginger Rogers, stuck up
' tne tetn
ae fad today.
Ginger, one
of the nio:es'
m o s t famous
dancers, has
none rock "n
roll dancing
herself for a
movie. Her ver
dict: The music
has a good
beat, and the dancing isn't much
different from the jitlerbuuging
that those complainting adults
did when they were teen-agers.
"I don't see anything degener
ate or suggestive about it." said
Ginger. -It's really like jitter
bug, only with a change of
rhythm and much more fun."
Teacher Role Assumed
Ginger has danced everything
from the waltz to the yam" in
movie musicals since the '30 s.
But she got her first taste of rock
'n' roll when the script called for
her to teach it to her movie
"Daughter" in a 20th Century
Fox drama. "Teenage Rebel" a
boxofficey title given to the staae
play. "Roomful of Roses." At
Ginger's suggestion, the studio
imported some young rook "n'
roll dancers to show her how it
was done.
When I arrived on the set. Gin
ger was stretched out from the
exhaustion of it all. She didn't
look a day older than when she
danced "The Big Apple" in "Vi
vacious Lady."
Those kids danced until they
were wringing wet." she said. "In
their bright blazers they look like
something out of the '20s: I love
to watch them dance."
Rock 'n' roll has been banned
in many American towns because .
autorities thought it was "suj
gestive." At many dances the
youngsters throw pop bottles.
But Gir.zer added. "I don't
know if it s exactly the music :
that does that. Some kids get
hopped up on pills."
"I think the adults object be
cause people don't like changes,
is her theory. "They think the .
old way is the best way. But that '
is blanketing individual expre:
sion.
"There were dances just as
mad in their youth. Next year
there'll be a different kind of (
dance and rock 'n' roll will look
conservative." she laughed.
"Meanwhile, rock 'n' roll is
fun."
