of the disturbing effects that
morphine has on the body. Un
fortunately, it can produce hab
ituation, and hence it will have
to bo used with care, and only
for short periods of time when
a pain is severe. I mention this
new drug because I wish to keep
reminding you good readers that
research work of this type is
going on the time in the
many great research laboratories
of the world. Every week new
drills of great usefulness are
found. The big drug houses now
plough back millions of dollars
of their profits jn order to find
new drugs and vaccines for us.
Years ago there was almost no
rcsoarch of this type. Then half
a century aao men like Dr. Abel,
of Johns Hopkins University,
founded departments of phar
macology, in which new drugs
were searched for and synthe
sized. Now. much of this work
has been taken over by the drug
houses which can spend enor
mous sums and can attract ex
cellent chemists to their well
equipped laboratories.
Parents Accused Unjustly
Of Rejecting Children
Recently, James J. Gallagher
of the University of Illinois In
stitute for Research on excep
tional children at Urbana
; charged that too many persons
I today accuse the mothers and
i fathers of handicapped children
of having injured their children
by rejecting them in some way.
Actual'.., as Gallagher pointed
out. the parents of a mentally
retarted and perhaps most dif
ficult and unpleasant child can
not be blamed for being dis
satisfied with him. and constant
ly oistrcs.sed over his behavior.
.Many such children are very
, hard to love, and some are re-
volting. Some, with their con
stant restlessness, wear the poor
mother out. Some who are bad-
tempered and violent could not
1 be loved by anyone but a de
! voted mother, f would never
i think of criticizing the parents
of such a child for not being
i loving enough. In their cir
. cumstanr-es I micht lie much less
, loving than they are. Certainly
such parents should never be
blamed for having produced the
child's illness.
Often, in these cases, all one
has to do to understand the
child's illness is to look around
at some of the mentally distur
bed or inadequate relatives.
Which, of course, dues not mean
that love and understanding and
good training cannot greatly help
the child. I am only saying,
"Don't follow the psychiatric
' party-line and parrot-like and
i unthinkingly accuse the parents
I of having given the child some
kind of a sexual complex. Today,
experts are turning away from
such theories. Let us remember
that they are only theories made
up out of whole cloth. For most
of these theories there never was
any proof and there never can
be.

Patrolman Resigns; Others Start Jobs
Frank L. Lengele, 711 West
Second st.. resigned as a patrol
man on the Medford police force
yesterday.
Lengele came to the Medford
force on June 22. 1954. He. his
wife and two children are mov
ing to Massachusetts soon.
Two other patrolmen were
hired recently by the depart
ment. Duane Dale Franklin. 21.
of 1470 Kings highway, started

than 10 years her senior, and is
the black sheep of his family,
who are very respected people
in our own circle.
We believe our daughter im
plicitly. She says they had a
secret engagement, but the
young man not only denies this,
but also denies having been in
timate with her. Nevertheless,
because of pressure from his
parents, he is willing to marry
her.
My husband feels strongly
they should be married at once,
but I think it would be a ter
rible crime to tie our little girl
to this scoundrel for life. He
could not make either a decent
father or a good husband. I
would much rather let our
daughter remain unmarried and
assume the burden of caring for
the baby than have this awful
wretch for a son-in-law.
Madge I think if my parents
had not interfered and fright
ened Bob. he would not take this
attitude. I love him and I believe
he loves me. What happened
was as much my fault as his, but
he had to be on the defensive
because he knew all the blame
would be heaped on him.
I want to marry him, but I do
not want him forced to marry

indicates the desirability of a
marriage. Madge had better
make up her mind that she will
have him only through pressure
whether the pressure of his
parents or her own.
She is quite unrealistic if she
