Assessments Ordered; '16 Miss USA Finalists Selected;

The city council last night
adopted ordinances ordering as
sessment? on installation of
water mains in the southeast
Medford area.
The ordinances order assess
ments on a portion of the Bar
nett rd. trunk v.ater main as a
lateral to abutting property and
on a portion of the Murphy
rd. trunk main as a lateral.
The water department recent
ly installed a 12 and 10 inch
trunk water main from the ex
isting IB inch main on Barnett
rd. to Murphy rd. Owners of
adjacent property will use the
trunk main for lateral purposes
and be assessed S2.25 per front
foot. On Murphy rd. an eight
inch water main has been installed.
The council also adopted ordi
nances creating funds for the
projects.

A petition signed by nine
property owners requesting in
stallation of a six inch water
main on C'restbrook rd. and El
lendale dr. was accepted and
referred to the city manager.
Petitioners represent 74.8 per
cent of the oroperty owners
fronting the proposed m.'ii.u.
The council called for bids
Aug. 21 for the sale of S75.000
of airport development bonds.
According to Robert Duff." city
(manager, the bond sale is neces
firv in order to complete this

9 on paving Ashland ave. from
TSinth to 11th sts.: paving Green
Va? dr. and Grecnway Circle;
and installing a water main on
Crestbrook rd. and Ellendale dr.
Award Contracts
Tile council awarded a con
tract for paving Modoc ave. from
Main st. to Voodlawn dr. to
the Rogue River Paving com
pany of Medford. The bid was
314.607.50, 2 6 per cent above
engineer's estimate. An ordi
nance was adopted creating a
lurid for the paving projects.
Apetition signed by five prop
erty owners was presented for
paving Eastwood ave., from East
Vain st. to Keene st. The coun
cil referred the petition to the
1 ity manager.
The council authorised instal
lation of a stop sign at. the in
tersection of 11th and Hamilton
sts. on recommendation by the
traffic engineer. Authorization
also was given to remove the
stop sign from the south side
of Barnebtirg rd. on Jackson st.
and that the stop sign on the
north side of Jackson st. be left
in place.
A bid was awarded to Crater
Lake motors for two Ford, six
cylinder, three-quarter ton pick
up trucks. Funds for the pur
chase will be taken from state
tax money. The trucks will be
used by the street and engineer
ing department.
The council awarded a con
tract to Hubbard Wray company
for the purchase of a Shawnee
back hoe to be attached to the
Case DI tractor. The bid was for
S2.225. A contract was awarded
to Haupert Equipment company
for purchase of a pneumatic
front end loader to replace the
present one.
The council accepted the hid
of Crater Lake Motor company
to purchase a half ton pickup
truck for the park department.
The bid was Sl.449.6.9. A trade
in of S150 on the present park
department truck will reduce
the amount to SI. 209. 69, Duff
said.
Public hearings were called
Aug. 7 on a change of zone of
lot? 10 through 15 in block 11
oi jaurcinursi addition and on
a request for change of setback
at St. Marv's school from 10 feet
to three feet.
Both requests were recom
mended by the planning com
mission.

Venn Reprimanded

District Attorney Eugene C.
Venn yesterday was reprimand
ed by his fellow lawyers for
some of the actions he has taken
in the continuing controversy
between himself and Circuit
Judge Frank B. Reid over jury
selection procedures.
The Lane County Bar Asso
ciation adopted a motion to cen
sure Venn at a meeting attended
by 70 members of the bar. A
formal news release was issued,
stating that the censure motion
has been adopted.
Officers of the Bar associa
tion and the group's public rela
tions committee met for more
than an hour before releasing
the news statement, which said
the cen-ure motion was pased
by a vole of Z'i to 18.

Then she surprised the movie
capital by being one of the few
film stars who scored on Broad
way. Shelley captured top no
tices for her exceptional pre
formance as a drug addict's wife
in "A Hatful of Rain."
Shelley has returned to Holly
wood a conquering heroine, so
I visited her to see if she was as
"new" as billed.
For one tiling, slie actually is
turning down movie scripts and
soing back to Broadway in Sep
tember. "I'll do a movie this summer
actress said. "We alreadv have

lyn Monroe invested in my play.
So did Linda Christian.
"I found the theater a tremen
dous experience and very grat
ifying. I can't have doubts about
my ability now. I've had people
reassuring me every night. No
body can tell me now I can't

Out of Shelley's 22 movies in
Hollywood she is proud of only
four. During those years of de
velopment. "I never fell I de
served to be called a star," she
said.
"The first time I had the feel
ing of what it meant was in New
York. The people stood up on
opening night and applauded
me. Then I felt I was entitled to
be a star."
Now the actress, appearing
more emotionally mature and
confident, is being "very wary
of what movie scripts I accept
now."
There are many signs Shelley
actually has changed from her
Broadway success and six years
of study at the Actors' Studio
in New York. For on thing, she
is happier at being accepted as
I a full-fledged member of the
i studio (Marilyn Monroe still is

Even when Miss USA and her
four runners-up are chosen to
night the atmosphere at the con
test still may be uneasy because
of a controversy between Sara
Tal. Miss Israel, and Marina
Orschel, 19, Miss Germany.
The dispute erupted shortly
before Tuesday night's selection
of Miss U.S.A. finalists when
Miss Tal refused to pose for
photographs with Miss Orschel.
The Israel beauty later allowed
her picture to be taken with the
German contestant, but only
after being coaxed by contest
officials.
"I have nothing against Miss
Germany personally," Mis Ta!
explained. "It is a matter of
something entirely different. If
I posed with her I would be
afraid to go home and face my
mother."
Miss Israel said her mother's
family was wiped out in Poland
when it was invaded by Ger
many and that her mother was
the only one of her whole fam
ily to escape.
Miss Germany commented
that Miss Israel was a nice girl,
and added. "I don't know what
to say."
"On the other hand." she con
tinued, "like any German. 1 am
proud of my country. It's very
un fortunate."
