Lawrence yielded a two - run
homer to Carl Furillo in the
first inning and another run in
the seventh when the red- hot
Furillo doubled home Duke Sni

son, incidentally, needs 13 more

win the PGA golf championship
which begins Friday on the Blue
Hill Country club course.

The PGA is a five day affair

Friday, two 18-hole rounds on
Saturday and Sunday, and 36
hole matches on Monday and
Tuesday. Thus to win it, the
champion . conceivably would
have to go 162 holes.

Credit for
NY Success

New York (U.R) Bob Tur
ley, an out-and-out flop on the
mound this season, was credited
today as "the man most respon
sible" for the Yankees' runaway
lead in the American League
race.
Sounds incredible, doesn't it,
but Yankee players, to a man,
swear it s true.
Turley, owner of an unim
pressive 5.52 earned run aver
age, has started 11 games this
season and failed to finish nine
of them but he has discovered
so many giveaway signs from
other pitchers in the league that
the Yankees are breezing to vic
tory after victory on his infor
mation. Uncanny
"He's positively uncanny,'
said one member of the Yankees.
"Turley knows what more than
half the pitchers in our league
are going to throw. On some
clubs, he has told us what every
one of their starters is throwing
before the guy lets the pitch go."
One of the Yankees who has
profited considerably from Tur
ley s advance information is
Mickey Mantel.
"When Mickey knows before
hand what pitch is coming, he's
murder," put in another Yankee
player. "And Mantle has ad
mitted that Turley "s calling the
shots has helped him plenty."
Turley doesn't talk much
about his unusual talent but he
does grin and say. T guess that's
about the only thing that's keep
ing me around here these davs."
About one-third of Hawaii's

slump which had plagued him
recently, increased his lead in
the Pacific Coast league batting
race today with an average of
.380.
The mammoth Los Angeles
Angels slugger batted .412 dur
ing the past week and clubbed
two more homers to move fur
ther ahead in that bracket as
well with a total of 39 round
trippers.
Bilko also drove in 12 more
runs last week, raising his RBI
mark to 109, far ahead of team
mate Gene Mauch who is tied
with Portland's Bob Borkowski
and Hollywood's Joe Duhem
with 61 for second place.
Mauch's average slipped four
points to .354 but he remained
second to Bilko in the chase for
the hitting crown and retained
his lead for the most hits with
140.

Pitcher Andy George is a
handy guy to have around for
the Salem Senators of the North
west league.
George notched his tenth vic
tory of the campaign last night
with a workmanlike 6-1 decision
over the Eugene Emeralds.
George allowed but six hits
and Eugene's only run came in
the seventh on a bases-loaded
ground out by Jerry Exley. Sal
em's hitting was paced by Ray
Webster, Frank Szekula and Ron
King, each of whom drove in
two runs.
Yakima tripped Wenatchee
4-2 and got the eventual win
ning run in the seventh via the
unearned route. It was 2-2 in
the sixth when Dick Renner
walked, moved up on a single
by Dick Neal and crossed on an
error. Herm Lewis cemented the
victory with a solo homer in the
eighth.

sight! There was Milwaukee's 1
big Joe Adcock chasing New
York's slender Ruben Gomez I
across the field. A third base
coach tried to tackle Gomez and
police finally restored peace and
quiet.
The wildest moment in Mil
waukee County stadium this sea
son started seconds after Gomez,
the Giant pitcher, hit Adcock on
the left wrist in the second in
ning, as Adcock walked slowly
to first, the big first sacker
sounded off to Gomez.
Suddenly, Gomez wheeled on
the mound as Adcock was about
half way to first and threw the
ball at Adcock again, this time
hitting him in the left side.
Gomez darted off the mound
as Adcock started for him. Go
mez won the race to the New
York dugout, thanks to interfer
ence by his teammates, umpires
and police.
Braves third base coach John
ny Riddle attempted to tackle
Gomez between third and home
but failed. The entire Giants'
bench came out of the dugout to
shelter Gomez from the lumber
ing Adcock and the Braves came
to Adcock's aid.

cock said in explaining his ac

For Not Running

because he failed to run out an
infield grounder against the
Pittsburgh Pirates Monday night.
Manager Fred Haney fined
O'Connell because the infielder
stopped after running about 65
feet to first base on what seemed
to be a routine out. As it turned
out, first baseman Dale Long
juggled the ball and pitcher Ron
nie Kline had to make the put-out.
