Shower Honors Bride To Be

Gold Hill A bridal shower
given for Miss Rila Waddell,
daughter of Mrs. Ruth McCoy,
was held at the Assembly of
God church in Gold Hill this
past week. Mrs. Holly Holder,
aunt of the bride to be. was
acting hostess for the church.
The 30 guests filled a large dec
orated table with gifts. The
t'ble was presided over with a
decorated umbrella with dainty
streamers flowing from it. Mrs.
Jessap was in charge of the
games.
Miss Waddell Is to be united
ir. marriage to David Girdner
of Cornville, Ariz., Sunday, July
15. At the present time Girdner
is attending the La Tournau
Technical school in Texas. He
will return with his bride to
resume his studies.
Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Leman
of Sitka, Alaska, and their chil
dren, Alice and Allan, have been
visiting at the Maybell Rains
home. Mrs. Leman is the step
daughter of Mrs. Rains. Leman
also has many relatives and
friends in the Rogue valley.
Alan Leman is planning on re
maining in Portland when his
parents return home to attend
the diesel school there.
Mr. and Mrs. Dan Clemence
have taken their new baby to
visit Mrs. Clemence's mother in
North Bend.
Dixie Lee Walker, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Delos Walker,
is being sponsored by the Gold
Hill Lion's club as a candidate
for jubilee queen of Jackson
ville. The Womens Society of Chris
tian service had a desert lunch
eon July 13, with Mrs. Ferd
Jones as hostess. Devotions were
led by Mrs. George Dorman and
the lesson was "Scatter the
Seeds in Brazil," led by Mrs.
Melvin Burnett.
It was put to vote and passed
that the society would donate
the money for Grace Gail's "trav
eling expense to the school of
missions which is held &t Camp
McGruder, Ore. A card of sym
pathy was sent to Mrs. L. L.
Smith upon the death of her
husband. The L. L. Smiths are
former residents of Gold Hill
and members of Methodist
chujch there. Mrs. Smith is pres
ently living at Edmonds, Wash.
A get well card was mailed to
Mrs. Ralph Wigle who is at
Sacred Heart hospital, Medford,
where she is suffering from a
broken hip. Before the meeting
closed plans were made for a
large welcome reception to be
given for the new minister and
his wife July 29.
Mrs. George Dorman and Mrs.
Maybell Raines received word
that they are now the great
grandmother and grandmother,
respectively, of a boy born to
Mr. and Mrs. Dotson of Ontario,
Calif.
The Gold Hill HEC was pleas
ed with the report given by Mrs.
Lucy Edington who attended the
state grange at Pendleton. A
dinner was given honoring Mrs.
Carrie Puhl on her birthday.
Mrs. Puhl's two daughters, Mrs.

Plans for Woodburn Base to Go Ahead
Washington U.R) Rep.
Walter Norblad (R-Ore.), said
Saturday that plans for an Air
Force-Navy air base in the
Woodburn, Ore., area would go
ahead as scheduled.
The Air Force received a $14
million authorization from Con-

Norblad explained that the
difference between the two fig
ures was due to the fact that the
Air Force would be unable to
spend more than the appropria
tion request in a single year.
Norblad said that within the
next week or two, after legisl
ation becomes effective, Army
Engineers would begin to ac
quire land and start design and
planning work for the base that
would replace the Portland air
base. He said construction would
begin the next fiscal year.
