sons, of Renton, Wash. The Burk-
halters and Mrs. Larsen took a
motor trip to San Francisco and

Driver Cited Margaret
Yvone Osborne, 814 West Second
st., was cited by city police
for failure to yield the right of
way after his car was involved
in a collision at the intersection
of Fourth st. and Holly st. Of
ficers said Mrs. Osborne's care
collided with another operated
by Peter Schalappi, Jacksonville.

Portfolio Lost Lena Valeree
Campbell, 1104 West Fourth st..
Medford, has reported to city
police the loss of a leather port
folio July 12 at the scene of
a two car accident at the inter
section of Peach and Palm sts.
The portfollio is described as
being 14 by 11 inches, tan with
a zipper all the way around and
containing Hot Point speculation
sheets and contract charts. The
name City Appliance is stamped
on all printed material, she said.

dled the transaction. Curley is

Grange is holding its annual

Collision Vehicles operated
by Charles Kenneth Oswald,
of Prospect, and Victor Louis
Chapman, of Cascade Gorge,
were involved in a collision
about 10:25 a.m. Saturday on
Highway 62. near Wildwood, ac
cording to the state police. No
injuries were reported or cita
tions issued.

Slight Injury Doris Marie
Griffin, 54, of Salem, suffered a
slight injury in the neck Thurs
day when the car in which she
was a passenger, operated by
Ina Mabel Shafer of Salem, col
lided with a truck operated by
Carter Elson Mason of Eagle
Point, at Riverside ave. and Mc-
Andrews Td., according to Med
ford police. She was not taken
to the hospital for treatment,
police said.

Collision Vehicles operated
by Lonna Jean Gish, 14 South
Bartlett st., and Lena Graham
Campbell, 559 South Keeneway
dr., were involved in an acci
dent Thursday at Peach and
Palm ave., according to Med
ford police. Miss Gish was cited
for failure to yield the right
of way and having no operator's
license, police said.

Servicemen
Twelve Area Men lo
Six-Months Training
Twelve men from Medford
and yicinity are to leave Med
ford today for Ft. Ord, Calif.,
to start six months active duty
training under the Reserve
Forces Act of 1955. The men
will be the first from this area
to attend the six-month training
for men in the 17 to 18Vi-year-old
category.
The 12 men are Jimmy
Crumm, Rodney Olson, Leon
Reisinger, Roger Caldwell,
James Hobbs from Medford and
Robert Fink from Central Point.
Also leaving are Keith Branson,
Kenneth Tucker, Walter. Hurl
but, and Calvin Gillespiee from
Medford, Lloyd McCashen from
Central Point and Robert Lance
from Gold Hill.
When the men return to pri
vate life next December, they
will have completed a three
phase training schedule encom
passing the fundamentals of
military training. The balance
of their eight-year enlistment
will be fulfilled by attendance
at weekly training sessions in
reserve units. They will not be
subject to draft while training
standards are maintained.
WINS IN GERMANY
SSgt. Harry H. Lowe station
ed with the U.S. Air Force in
England won first place in a
model airplane contest held at
Wiesbaden, Germany the first
of June. Sgt. Lowe competed
against contestants from all over
Europe and the United Kingdom.
He placed first in beauty and
workmanship. Sgt. Lowe rep
resented the 3920 Squadron of
Brice Norton Air Base. He re
ceived a beautiful trophy and a
trip to the United States to
compete in the World Wide con
test. Mrs. Mae Lowe received a
phone call from her son, SSgt.
Harry H. Lowe Jr. Saturday,
July 7, when he landed at New
Jersey on his way with 11 other
contestants from all over Europe,
who had also won first place
in other events, to take part in
the world wide contest which
is being held at Ellington, Texas.
The contest is to be held July
15-17.

under the "buddy program" that
provides for three or more men
going as a group to be put in
the same recruit company during
nine weeks training.

BELLE SHEARER
Funeral services for Mrs.
Belle Shearer, 81, of 326 Holly
st., who died in a local hospital
Tuesday, will be held at 10:30
a.m. Monday in Chapel Mortu
ary. The Rev. George A. Tro
bough, assistant pastor at the
First Methodist church, will of
ficiate. Interment will be in the
Medford IOOF cemetery.
Mrs. Shearer, daughter of Joe
and Jane McNeil Fritz, was born
in Watertown, N.Y. May 4, 1875.
She was married in 1907 in
Portland to Henry Shearer, who
preceded her in death in Med
ford in 1932. She has been a
resident of Medford for about
50 years.-
Survivors include two cous
ins, Mrs. Emma Brown and Mrs.
Jessie Smith, both of Seattle.

Robert E. Frick, of the Army
Signal corps, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Walter Frick, 910 Sunset
ave., has returned to the United
States after a year in South
Korea. He will leave for Camp
Meade, Maryland on August 14.
RADIOMAN ARRIVES
Private LeRoy Barker, son of
Walter Barker, 3075 Crater Lake
highway, is scheduled to arrive
at Fort Lewis, Wash., this month
from Alaska as part of opera
tion gyroscope, the Army's unit
rotation plan.
Barker is a radio operator in
the 71st infantry division.
ARCTIC BOUND
Army Master Sergeant Wal
ton R. Martin, son of Mrs. E. T.
Martin, Ashland, is scheduled
to depart from Seattle this
month for the Arctic to take
part in Project 572-West.
The project will carry sup
plies and equipment to distant
early warning radar stations in
the northern regions of Alaska
and Canada. Sgt. Martin is a
platoon sergeant in the 511th
transportation company. The
unit is expected to return to its
home station at Fort Eustis, Va.,
in October.
ASSISTANT ADVISOR
MSgt. Donald C. Bills, of
Medford, has been named as as
sistant advisor at the Medford
branch of the Sixth Army re
serves, Oregon Military district.
He previously has been stationed
at the Presidio, San Francisco.
TOP RATING
The Naval Electronics divis
ion 13-5 in Medford has received
the top rating over all other
electronics divisions in the 13th
Naval district for June by the
district commandant in Seattle.
The 13th Naval district is com
posed of Oregon, Washington,
Idaho and Montana Naval elec
tronics divisions. The rating was
based on attendance and annual
training duty.
AIRCRAFT MECHANIC
Alc Jerry M. Stinson, 19, son
of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Stinson
of 1219 West 10th st., is now an
aircraft mechanic crew chief at
the 35th air division, Dobbins
Air Force base, Marietta, Ga.
Stinson graduated from Medford
High school in 1954.

Gerald D. Green, son of Mr.
and Mrs. George S. Green of
1410 Euclid ave., has been select
ed at the Naval training center,
San Diego, Calif., as apprentice
petty officer second class. The
apprentice petty officers, sched
uled to graduate June 30, are
chosen from seaman recruits to
assist company commanders.
John Wisely, son of Mr. and
Mrs. John A. Wisely of 223 Pine
St., Central Point, also has been
selected as apprentice petty of
ficer second class.

Couple Killed Under
Fast Passenger Train
Hickory, N.C- U.R) A
man and a woman were dragged
clawing and screaming to their
death here Friday afternoon as
a speeding passenger train
smashed into, a truck at an in
tersection and ground it be
neath its wheels.
Two youths, one the son of
the dead woman, leaped to safe
ty from the rear of the truck
and then watched horror-stricken
while tthe vehicle was crush
ed with ifcs occupants inside.
The dead were identified as
driver Tom Warren, 55, and
Mrs. Paul Huffman, 42, a house
wife. Tlie youths, who saw the
train approaching and leaped to
safetyi, were Paul Junior Huffman,-'
13, and Billy Davis, 16,
also, of Hickory.

Mr. Hibbard was born in Al
ma, Kan., Sept. 6, 1880. On June
24, 1903, in Medford, he was
married to Bertha Davis, who
survives. He had been a memb
er of the First Baptist church
for 50 years. Before retiring Mr.
Hibbard had been in the grocery
business in the valley for several
years.
Survivors besides his wife in
clude one daughter, Mrs. E. C.
Conrad, of Medford; one sister,
Mrs. J. H. Norman of Santa Bar
bara, Calif.; two grand chil
dren, Gary and Marilyn Conrad
of Medford, and two great
grandchildren.

Shady Core Grange
The Shady Cove Grange HEC
ladies and their families met on
the lawn of Mr. and Mrs. Phil
Motschenbacher, - Shady Cove,
July 10, for a potluck dinner
and a social evening. Guests
were Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Duck
er, Mr. and Mrs. E. S. Strothers,
and Mr. and Mrs. Barrett of
Shady Cove, and Mrs. F. A.
Stewart and Mrs. Guss Carlson,
Eagle Point.
The Shady Cove Grange met
Wednesday, July 11, Master Ce
cil Kee presiding.
Mrs. Ed Honsten announced
that she has received several
boxes of clothing and other arti
cles to be used if needed in case
of fire or a flood disaster.
Master Kee announced a mass
meeting to be held at the school
gym Monday, July 23, for the
purpose of informing the public
of the progress and status of
the Shady Cove-Trail fire de
partment. Everyone in the com
munity is urged to be present.
Mrs. Elsie Busch was elected
to the executive board and Mrs.
Delia. Craven as gatekeeper, as
these offices were vacated by
Mrs. Bertoglio, who moved to
California recently.
A program of readings and
guessing games was enjoyed
during the lecture hour.

following the meeting.
