Back Stairs: Ike's Grandson
By DONALD J. GONZALES
United Press Correspondent
Gettysburg, Pa. (U.R)
Back stairs at the Eisenhower
farm:
Eight -year -old David Eisen
hower finally got to see his new
riding horse, Sporty Miss, when
he visited his grandad at the
farm. The roan horse and one
for the President, dubbed Doo-
ble-Do-Doo, arrived at the farm
about June 1. David didn't get
up to the farm until last week
however, because of the Presi
dent's illness.
His eyes bugged when he saw
the horse, hand -tooled leather
western saddle and bridle, trim
med with silver. But the boy
didn't go too far on any wild
west doings. This trip, he just
visited the barn each day and
let Sporty Miss nibble sugar out
of his hand. David apparently
decided against riding until his
legs get a little longer.
The so - called Eisenhower
draperies are starting to make
an appearance in Gettysburg,
but not on a grand scale yet.
The drapery material outlines
highlights of the President s and
Mrs. Eisenhower's lives. Pictured
are the first family's homes over
the years at Abilene, Kan., Den
ver, White House and Gettys
burg. Other pictures show West
Point and Columbia University.
Here and theve are elephants,
favorite flowers of the Eisenhow
ers, and shields with five stars
for the President's day as su
preme commander in Europe.
Of course, the Eisenhowers
have some of the drapes at the
farm. But the drapes are in only
two other places in Gettysburg
so far, in a private home and at
a new eating house, the Lamp
Post.
For the most part, Gettysburg
people take the Eisenhower fam
ily Drettv much as a matter of
course. After all this town of
7.200 people have more than
800,000 visitors a year. More
are comine to the famed battle
field area now . that the Presi
dent's farm offers an extra at
traction. Some visitors however,
have to scramble for accommo
dations when the President is
here for a long time. For ex
ample, White House staff mem
hers, newsmen and photograph
ers have 50 rooms in the 100
room Gettysburg Hotel. Maj.
Gen. Howard M. C. Snyder, the
President's physician, four U.S.
Army Signal Corps personnel,
an unknown number of Secret
Sprvice men and two White
House chauffeurs have taken
over quite a bit of motel space.

In studying the insulation
quality of the fur of nine Can
adian animals black bear, deer
mouse,- muskrat, hare, polar
bear, red fox, red squirrel, wolf,
and wolverine it was found
that the wolf's fur is best for
its thickness. Least, the polar
bear's.
Summer Fur Less Warm
As for winter-summer change:
the black bear's summer fur has
only 52 per cent of the warmth
of its winter's fur; while a musk
rat's remained most constant,
with a change of only 12 per
cent.

A mosquito is plumb full of

and it has moisture detecting and

Caribou Skin Warm
Planning to go to the north
land this winter? Worried about
what to wear what'll be warm
est, foj its weight? Then wear
what the Eskimos wear, sug
gests Dr. William S. Laughlin,
of the University of Wisconsin.
In comparing the most scien
tific clothes with the Eskimo's,
the anthropologist found that
the Eskimo's caribou skin outer
garments, when the hair is -left
on the hide are both lighter and
warmer than anything the U. S.
Army has been able to come up
with.
The secret perhaps is in the
caribou hair it's hollow. This
hollow hair traps air and air is
a good insulator.
As for the cumbersome bulky
looking boots (mukluks) and mit
tens, they are not as heavy as
they look in fact, the Eskimo's
outer clothing weighs far less
than the outer clothing designed
by American military scientists.

Allspiced Vegetables
Allspice with vegetables gives
menus new flavor interest in
ways like these: Corn-on-the-cob
so frequently enjoyed often re
sults in several ears being left
over. Simply cut corn from the
cob, add a bit of table cream,
salt, pepper and a dash of all
spice for an enjoyable return
engagement.
Allspice is good with diced or
sliced cooked carrots and with
stewed fresh tomatoes. Just add
one-fourth teaspoon ground all
spice to melted butter along with
the salt and pepper before pour
ing over vegetables.
Good Idea to Thaw
Frozen Chicken
Home cooks often ask whether
chicken can go from freezer to
frying pan or broiling rack, oven ,
or stewing pot without thawing
and cook successfully.
Experts after considerable re
search, find that it's best to thaw
frying, broiling, roasting chick
en. Cut-up chicken for stewing
however may go hard-frozen
into the water. Take the chicken
out of the freezer and put it in
the refrigerator a day ahead to
be sure it's safely thawed for
cooking. Poultry should thaw in
its original package. The skin of
an uncovered bird becomes
tough and dry when exposed
to the air during thawing.
It is -obvious that cut-up broil
er and frying chicken need thaw
ing to separate the pieces pre
liminary to flouring or dipping
in batter or eggs and crumbs.
Chicken or other poultry roasted
unthawed is likely to be over
done and dry on the outside by
the time the inside meat is done.
Ice Cream Every Day
Plentiful ice cream, America's
favorite dessert at reasonable
cost, is now consumed at the
rate of nearly 600,000,000
pounds a year; cones in more
than 200 different flavors using
about 250,000,000 pounds of
fruits and nuts. Packed with
good nutrition, ice cream is an
every day treat that adds infinite
variety and appetite appeal to
any meal.
A small serving is just right
to put finishing touch on a heavy
meal. Topped with nuts, coconut,
fruit or sweet sauces, it builds
a slim meal into something spe
cial. Topping suggestions include
chocolate syrup, caramel syrup,
honey . . frozen, fresh or canned
fruit . . . nuts, coconut, shaved
semi-sweet or sweet chocolate,
preserves.

chicken, barbecued chicken,
stewed chicken with dumplings
are likely to be family fare at
least once a week. Turkeys too
are very good buys. For several
days of good eating, the 12 to
16 pound birds are unsurpassed.
Roast in pan without a cover
and add no water. Many are
getting acquainted with three
to six pound turkeys for frying,
broiling. If you've home freezer
space, now is a good time to
put in a dozen broiler-fryers,
maybe two turkeys. Put in a
supply of bargain priced can
ned cranberry "jel" or whole
cranberries.
Best pork buys are likely to
be cuts from the loin, spareribs
and bacon.
Freshly ground beef and cuts
for stewing continue at bargain
price levels.
When buying lamb for shish
kebab or shashlik, many feel
that best value is to be found in
buying a leg of lamb, having it
boned and cut in Hi inch
squares by market man.
Vegetable bins are stacked
high with good quality lettuce
and practically everything you
can think of for the making of
salads. Try shredded raw beets,
adding them at the last minute
so color will not "run." Consider
snowy white cauliflowerets,
diced; and sliced celery. Use
sliced, unpeeled cucumbers,
grated or shredded carrots,
shredded cabbage; green onions,
tops and all, green peppers in
slivers or thin rings. Tomatoes
in wedges are best added after
salad has beentossed. Thin slices
of zucchini add pleasing texture
and piquant flavor to green
salads. Radishes and green on
ions are favored salad stand-bys.
For cooked vegetable variety,
choose from beets, cabbage, car
rots, cauliflower, celery, corn-on-the-cob,
eggplant, mushrooms,
onions, green peas, peppers, po
tatoes .spinach, squash.
Fruit displays offer berries in
increasing variety; apricots,
plums, nectarines, peaches in
creasing in supply right along.
Seedless grapes and Cardinals
have appeared at low cost.
Cantaloupes and watermelons
are plentiful, reasonable in cost
for breakfast as well as later-in-the-day
enjoyment.
Eggs are an investment in
good nutrition. Keep them on
the breakfast menu every day.
Ice cream is plentiful and of
fers extraordinary nutrition at
reasonable cost.
Other good buys are all dairy
products, peanut butter, rice.
