Jackson county sheriffs officers
Thursday arrested a 16-year-old
Medford boy and held him tern
porarily in the county jail by
order of juvenile authorities,
deputies reported today. The
youth was wanted on a petty lar
ceny charge.

Accident Vehicles operated

were involved in an accident

been received by friends here of
the death July 12 of Mrs. Helen
Collier, in San Fernando, Calif.
Mrs. Collier lived in Medford
many years. Her husband, Don
Collier, was associated with
Western Union. Her daughter is
Sister David Maureen, at St.
Mary's High school. She has five
other children who lived near
her in California.
To Meeting Clifford B.
Cordy, county agent for horti
culture, and Iain McSwan, plant
pathologist at Oregon State col
lege, will leave for Mt. Vernon,
Wash., this week end to attend
a meeting of horticulturists, en
tomologists and plant patholo
gists Monday through Wednes
day. Before returning home,
Cordy said he and McSwan will
visit James Marshall in the Ok
anogan villey to see new spray
equipment Marshall has develop
ed. Cordy will return to his of
fice Monday, July 23.
Hay Field Fire Burns
Large Area Yesterday
Fire in a hay field on the A.
C. Allen ranch northeast of
Modoc orchard spread over a
large area yesterday afternoon
and caused considerable damage,
Central Point rural firemen re
ported. The blaze burned up a large
number of hay bales. Origin of
the fire was not learned, fire
men said. '
Two Central Point rural
pumpers fought the flames and
the state forestry .department
sent one truck to the scene.

up the 13 per cent decline from
a six-day cumulative rise suffer
ed Thursday. .
Railroad shares Improved and
reached a new high since May
7. For industrials it was the best
level touched since May 7 and
for the market as a whole since
May 11.

Flood Debris Causes
Train Derailment
Ontario, Ore. (U.R) A flash
flood that swept rocks and up
rooted trees onto Union Pacific
tracks caused derailment of a
freight train and held .up east
and west bound streamline pas
senger trains for six hours last
night near Cobb, Ida., 11 miles
west of Weiser.
No one was hurt in the mis
hap. The four diesel units of the
freight train and 11 boxcars
were derailed.
Fortunately, the derailment oc
curred near a passing track, and
after the six-hour delay, the
streamliners were able to pro
ceed. Crews were reported work
ing today to clear the main line.

Mrs. Nellie Franzwa, 75, of Eu
gene, as Catholic Mother of the
Year for 1956.
The mother of five children
was honored for her 50 years of

Long-Time Resident
Ashland Arthur H. Daven-
I hill, 81, a resident of the Rogue
Valley for 63 years, died early
Thursday morning at a local
nursing home.
Mr. Davenhill was. born June
11, 1875, in England. He was
well known in this valley as a
rancher. His wife, Edith Eliza
beth, died June 17, 1948.
Mr. Davenhill is survived by :
two sisters, Eleanor Goode,
Fresno, Calif., and Mrs. Char
lotte Gibson, Bakersfield, Calif.,
and several nieces and nephews.
