Discussing the reluctance of
the average Irish bachelor to
marry until his middle 30s, Colm
Brogan commented, "Ireland is
a man's country, one of the few
left. In a man's country the life
of a gay bachelor is gay indeed."
(Note The life of a gay bachelor
can be very gay in this country,
too. Possibly a lot gayer than in
Ireland. However, the husband
hunting technique of the aver
age American girl is so well de
veloped and handled with such
cleverness that, it takes a very
unusual bachelor to retain his
liberty after the age of 25. 1 am
referring, of course, to so called
"eligible" or desirable bachelors.
There is considerabletruth in
this country that frequently re
peated feminine remark, "All
the nice men are married.")

Swedes are the most enthusi
astic consumers of coffee and al
coholic liquors in the world. The
Swedish love, of liquor is held
lightly In check by some ex
tremely strict legislation. You
cannot buy a drink in Sweden
unless you order a meal. You
cannot drink alcoholic liquor
standing up. No drinks are sold
before noon. The portion of al
coholic drink served a female is
less than that of a male. The fa
vorite drink of Swedes is
Schnapps, one of the world's
most potent potions. The Swedes
handle their liquor well and in
ebriated persons are rarely seen
in public places.
Hones and Women
as my uncle AI and I were
walking up Nassau Street we
heard a passerby say, "Why, that
dame is nothing but a dumb
blonde." My Uncle Al said, "Ed
gar, something every young man
should know is that there is no
such thing is a dumb blonde."
I thought of this when I heard
Diana Dors, the British beauty,
referred to' as "a dumb blonde."

record, recently found itself in
print.
One of its employees arrived
late" at a Senate subcommittee
meeting chairmanned by Sen.
William Langer (R.-N.D.). Lan
ger found it "necessary to fine
the committee reporter S20 for
being 20 minutes late. Later he
inserted an account of his'action
in the Congressional Record.
Newspapers offered various
reason for the stenotypist's tar
diness. Jesse L. Ward said none
was correct. He said the incident
arose from an omission in the
firm's assignment sheet.
MacArlhur Hearing
Ward told Langer what had
happened because he didn't want
the senator to think ' we take
our responsibilities lightly."
Ward and Alfred C. Paul,
whose firm prepares the tran
script of President Eisenhower's
news conferences as well as the
records of many congressional
committees, joined forces nearly
25 years ago to write the record
of the National Recovery admin
istration. This was the "largest (report
ing) undertaking in history," ac
cording to Ward. The firm put
in more than three years with
the recovery administration, re
porting on all phases of its work.
Some 300,000 pages of transcript
were the product of this enter
prise. One of the firm's most exten-
ana is 24. Her husband is 31.
They started from scratch and,
now own nine prosperous busi
ness outfits and 25 real estate
properties. They have an estate
on the Thames. They own a
yacht, a plane and three auto
mobiles. Cigarettes
That establishment on the
avenue of the Americas, Manhat
tan, which features the sale of
several hundred different brands
of cigarettes has one called
"Prince De Monaco." This is an
Egyptian brand named in honor
of one of Prince Rainier's prede
cessors. Beauty
Italian women are the most
beautiful in Europe. On this all
recognized experts on the sub
ject of feminine pulchritude are
agreed. The most beautiful wom
en in Italy are those of Northern
Italy. Incidentally, the women of
the Piedmont mountain section
of Italy are said to have the finest
hair in the world. It is to that
part of Italy the wig makers go
to purchase hair from the fem
inine natives. Keep this in mind
if your wife is considering the
purchase of a. transformation or
a chignon. Advise her to ask for
one made from the hair of a
Northern Italian blonde.

Am asked if Guiseppe Gari
baldi, the great Italian patriot,
was red-haired. He was. Incident
ally, something not frequently
mentioned is that.' Garibaldi was
a United States citizen. He
once lived on Staten Island, N.Y.,
where he worked as candle
maker and became naturalized.
Another celeb'rated resident of
Staten Island was' William
Shakespeare. I am referring, of
course, to the William Shake
speare who played in the back
field for Notre Dame during the
Knute Rockne era.

Ward and Paul, at one time
or another, "has reported for
every committee of the House
and Senate," Ward said.
Ward and Paul turn out about
1.000 pages of transcript daily.
The firm employs 20 typists and
20 stenotypists, the latter all
able to take down 225 words or
more per minute. Two employ
ees are shorthand experts but
seldom exercise their skill, be
cause the stenotype method is
used almost exclusively in the
word - recording field today,
Ward said.
Clithero Elected ,
OLBA President Here
James Clithero, operator of
the Rogue Riviera in Gold Hill,
was elected president of the Ore
gon Licensed Beverage associa
tion. Chapter 19, at a recent
meeting at the Oak Wood Coffee
shop, Phoenix.
Other officers elected were
Fred Baggebstos, vice president,
of Otto's Tavern, Medford, and
Fairman Connell, secretary, of
the Gold Nuggett Tavern, Gold
Hill.
Clithero said the chapter will
work toward a closer relation
ship with the Oregon Liquor
commission, local enforcement
agencies and governing bodies in
matters which involve the asso
ciation segment of the industry.
Officers of the chapter will
attend the executive committee
meeting of the National Licensed
Beverage association in Port
land, July 16-18, and the state
convention at Gearhart in September.
Scientists Break Down
Hemoglobin Structure
Rochester, N. Y. (U.R)
Two University of Rochester
scientists have broken down the
structure of hemoglobin a
feat expected to aid research
into blood disorders and anemia.
After one and one-half years
on their project, Dr. Martin Mor
rison and Dr. Jean L. Cook, were
able to "bust" blood hemoglobin
into its three molecular compon
ents. The scientists explained that
their discovery would not be of
immediate aid to people suffer
ing from anemia or blood dis
orders, but they said it was an
important step towards discover
ing a cure for such maladies.
The research project was spon
sored by the National Heart Institute.

Governor Announces
Safety Commission
Salem (U.R) Formation of the
Oregon Traffic Safety Commis
sion has been announced by
Gov. Elmo Smith.
The new co-ordinating agency
will be composed of heads of
state departments directly con
cerned with traffic accident pre
vention in Oregon.
The commission will develop
a permanent, long-range traffic
accident prevention program in
volving all state agencies with
traffic safety responsibilities, the
governor said.
Commission members named
were: R. H. Baldock, state high
way engineer; Rex Putnam, state
superintendent of public instruc
tion; Charles H. Heltzel, public
utilities commissioner; Robert Y.
Thornton, attorney general;
Warne H. Nunn, director of the
motor vehicle department; Wil
liam A. Callahan, chairman state
industrial accident commission;
and H. G. Maison, superintend
ent of state police.
