Civil Defense PA Equipment Available
Washington (U.R) A new
line of public adress equipment
specifically designed for civil
defense is now available for pur
chase under the federal-state
matching funds program, the
Federal Civil Defense Adminis
tration has announced.
The lightweight, battery-powered
voice amplifiers have been
certified as meeting FCDA
standards.
The portable, self - contained
equipment may be used by civil
defense field personnel to sup
plement warnings given by
sirens, to give radiological fall
out information, prevent panic
and disorder, relay emergency
instruction, direct rescue opera
tions and control traffic among
ether things, the FCDA said.
The equipment includes mega
phones capable of voice projec
tion up to half a mile, more pow
erful, two-unit megaphone sys
tems, speaker systems easily
mounted on command, police
and rescue trucks, dual purpose
systems that may be mounted
on vehicles or hand-carried and
speaker systems equipped with
stands and remote microphone
for public address.

KIDNEY STONES
Many persons ask what to do
about kidney stones. My answer
is. see a urologist and take his
advice. Some
times a person
will discover,
a c c iden tally,
that he has a
big, so-called
stag - horn
stone, which
c o m p 1 e tely
fills the inside
of a kidney.
Waiter Alvarez usually, in
such cases, especially if there
are no symptoms and no infeo
tion of the urine, nothing needs
to be done. Removal of the
kidney would not help the pa
tient. Many persons who have
a few small stones imbedded
in the substance of the kidney
also need no treatment. The per
sons who need treatment are
those in whom the stones are
keeping up an infection of the
urine, or in whom some sand
keeps going down the ureter or
tube that carries the urine to
the bladder. Every time a grain
of sand goes down, the person
suffers excruciating pain.
Thousands of people want to
know if there is any drug that
can be taken by mouth to dis
solve kidney stones, and my
answer is that I know of none.
We physcians are not even sure
that we know how to keep kid
ney stones from forming again
and again and again. In some
cases the trouble is in the par
athyroid glands, little nodules
that lie back of the thyroid
gland in the neck. With certain
diseases of these glands there
can be too much lime in the
blood, and some of this lime
can form stones in the kidneys.
Other persons, some of them
gouty, can get kidney stones
that are made out of salts of
uric acid.
Some of the persons who have
stones in the urinary bladder
can have them crushed and re
duced to small fragments that
can then be washed out. An in
strument is passed in through
the urethra, or tube through
which the urine leaves the blad
der. The operator fishes around
until he gets the stone between
the two jaws of the instrument
and then he crushes it.
An operation for removing
bladder stones was one of the
first to be devised by primitive
surgeons. A knife was driven up
from the crotch into the bladder
and then the stone was pulled
out with the help of a special
forceDs. Samuel Peovs. the
great diarist, on a certain date
each year used to celebrate the
anniversary of his operation for
"the stone."
Spasmodic Torticollis
People write asking what to
do for a terrible wry neck
(torticollis). Sometimes it is so
bad that the person has to sit
or walk holding his jaw with
one hand. If he did not do this,
the head would be drawn down
against one shoulder. The other
day I saw a man walking along
the street, holding his head in
line with the handle of his un
brella. Torticollis is a miserable dis
ease, the causes of which are
pcorly understood. In many
cases the patient is a fcunch of
nerves and the best hunch is
that his nervousness is the cause.
In some cases, the trouble seems
to be due to hysteria, which is
a nervous disease. In these cases
the person could get well if
he wanted to bad enough. Some
times surgeons operate and cut
the contracted and shortened
and stiff muscles, but this does
not always work well. I remem
ber once hearing one of Amer-
ica s greatest surgeons telling
how. in one operation, he had
cut all the big muscles in the
side of the neck which could
pull the head down, and still
the head was drawn down.
About all I can advise the pa-
tiont with this disease to do is
to go to a good neurologist and
take his advice.

preoccupation with sweater
measurements, but girls like
Diana keep rising to fame.
Rita, however, is determined
to take another swipe at the
idea.
Conscious of Bosoms
"America is too bosom con
scious," she said seriously. "Lit
tle girls who have small bosoms
feel they're nothing they're
getting horrible complexes over
something they can do nothing
about.
"Believe me, when guys stand
on the corner and watch the
girls go by, they whistle at the
front view but they look longest
at the back view."
Rita (who measures 34-21-35)
got carried away by this theory
when she recently entertained
with disc jockey Johnny Grant's
troup in Korea and Japan. She
discovered "Oriental girls are
among the most feminine in the
world and they have little
bosoms."
"You should hear American
men talk about how wonderful
they are!" she said. "I talked
with the Japanese girls to learn
what their fascination is to men.
Their gestures are so delicate.
American women are becoming
too aggressive.
Body Doesn't Count
"After all, it's the woman who
counts, not the body, anyway,"
she added.
Rita showed me a trunkful of
Oriental fabrics she brought back
to be made into back-clinging
sheath dresses copied after those
she wore in "The King and I."
"In Korea I did three shows a
day," she continued. "The boys
all have cameras and every place
we went they wanted to take
pictures of us. Once they lined
up for blocks and asked me to
walk slowly by and pose. Most
of them wanted a back view with
me looking over my shoulder.
"When I'd step into a car, some
camera fan would shout, 'Hold
it!'
They kept asking me to turn
around during my show."

Coon Would Amend
Hells Canyon Bill
Washington (U.PJ Rep. Sam
Coon (R-Ore.) said Monday he
will geek to amend the Helk
Canyon power bill to reserve
400,000 kilowatts of power for
the state of Oregon.
"I don't think that the Hells
Canyon bills sponsored by Rep.
Edith Green (D-Ore.) and Sen.
Wayne Morse (D-Ore.) are fair
to our state," Coon said in a
statement. "I want to see Oregon
get its fair share of power from
this federal dam if it is to be
built."
Bills for construction of a sin
gle federal dam at Hells Canyon
on the Oregon-Idaho border have
been approved by the House and
Senate Interior Committees. The
legislation is waiting House and
Senate action.

lice have booked a second teen
age youth in connection with
a Saturday morning street fight
that resulted in the death of a
crippled 53-year-old man.
Police identified the second
youth as John S. Renfro, 18. He
was being held as a material wit
ness under S1000 bail.
. Jerry Richard Stout, 19, was
charged with the murder of John
Levorson.
Levorson died in a Portland
hospital early Saturday after his
beaten and blood-smeared body
was found in the street in front
of a southwest Portland apart
ment house.
