good, that it is harmful, and
that today it is unnecessary.
Anyone with the slightest know
ledge of the history of medicine
knows what a wonderful gift
to humanity vaccination was. In
the old days before 1798 every
one had to have smallpox, and
millions died of it. Then came
Dr. Jenner's great discovery,
and almost 100 per cent of the
people all over the world who
were vaccinated were immed
iately protected, and the awful
epidemics stopped.
Few people in the United
States know that the American
Indians were largely wiped out,
not by the Western advance of
the whites, but by smallpox. In
a big library, anyone who is
interested can find a book writ
ten some years ago by a man
and his wife anti-vaccination-ists
who started hunting for

Higher Education and Klamath
Art association, is scheduled to
begin August 13 at Oregon
Technical Institute under direc
tion of David J. McCosh, profes
sor of art, University of Oregon.
Oil and water color painting
and other media will be studied.
The two week workshop of
fers two or three credit hours
from the University of Oregon.
Fee for three credit hours, full
day session, is $37.50, for two
credit hours, half-day session,
$25.00.
McCosh has been with the
University of Oregon since 1934.
His works have been exhibited
in Metropolitan museum. Mu
seum of Modern Art, Whitney
collection and Academy gallery
in New York, and in museums
in Chicago, Seattle. San Fran
cisco, Portland, Denver and
Chicago.

less. They were so overwhelmed
by the facts encountered that
they became strong proponents
of vaccination. They wrote a
book telling of the terrible hap
penings when smallpox rapidly
wiped out whole tribes of
American Indians. Only when
the Indians were vaccinated
were they protected.
Danger Not Great
It is true that today in this
country the danger from small
pox to an individual is not great,
but just let a generation of un
protected young persons grow
up, and we are likely to see
terrible epidemics again through
the land.
Opponents of vaccination say
that if smallpox were to become
epidemic it would be mild and
would not kill. This may be,
but if these people had ever
seen an epidemic of black small
pox start, as I did once, and
if they had seen it kill or nearly
kill half of the men and women
struck down, they would not
be trusting to mildness in the
disease when it comes.
My reason for writing on this
subject today is the recent re
port from Iran that smallpox,
previously epidemic in Isfahan
province, has just been wiped
out entirely by the vaccination
of 750,000 people. Today, with
airplanes bringing into our ports
each day hundreds of persons
who, the day before, were "in
a country in which smallpox
is always smouldering, health
authorities must be particularly
careful to keep our people vaccinated.
