In Greatest Record
Of Service in '55
The 4,200 clubs of Kiwanis In
ternational in the United States
and Canada turned in their
greatest record of community
service in 1955.
That was the statement of
I. A. Mirick, president of the
Medford club, in reporting the
activity figures for the year from
the Kiwanis general office in
Chicago.
Last year, Kiwanians partici
pated in activities ranging from
the purchase of an artificial eye
for an underprivileged child to
attracting a new industry to a
community. The eight fields of
principal participation are agri
culture and conservation; public
and business affairs, support of
churches in their spiritual aims;
boys and girls work; Key Clubs;
Circle K clubs; underprivileged
child; and vocational guidance.
Contributions Listed
Thoueh fund raising is a minor
part of their operation, they col
lected $5,844,371.81 m 185S,
which they contributed to youth
xervice of various kinds. They
raised $4,296,300.60 for hospitals
and hospital facilities; they con
tributed $1,508,121.20 to neeay
churches; and they distributed
$243,046.97 to deserving stu
dents through scholarship loans.
Always interested in children,
they provided treatment for 143,
854 of them in dental clinics;
they assisted 14,229 delinquents;

youngsters whose parents couldJ
not provide it lor inem.
Kiwanis also sponsored 13,406
safety patrols; provided recrea
tional facilities for. 790,762 boys
and girls; and sponsored 9,162
baseball teams last year.
Under the vocational guidance
program, they aided 485,136
youngsters in their search for
proper occupations; they aided
35,614 more thruogh "Work ex
perience programs"; and they
counseled 38,954 veterans.
Resurfacing Main
Runway to Start '
Central Heating company of
lugene will complete resurfac
ing of the main runway at the
Medford airport starting Tues
day, according to Vern Thorpe,
director of public works.
About 3,580 feet of runway
was resurfaced, last year but the
operation was' not completed
because of insufficient funds in
the CAA federal aid program
account. Thorpe said. About 1,
820 feet of runway remains to
be resurfaced, he said.
The contract was awarded to
Central Heating company about
a month ago on a bid ot $4i,
195.50. The project should be com
pleted in five or six days
Thome said. During the opera
tion the main runway will be
closed and air traffiq will use
the cross runway, he adde.
