The Family Council
Editor's Note: The Family Council consists of a judge, a psychiatrist,
newspaper editor, a women's page editor and two newspaper writers. These
consult with clergymen oi all faiths and denominations. All letters art held
in complete confidence.
Len I have made a mess of
our life.
Janice I can't be young for
him.
Len I seem to have made a
terrible mess of my family life
and I am desperately eager to
make amends, but my wife
seems unwilling or unable to re
spond to my new attitude.
At 31, I have three children, a
new home and an excellent job,
which I have achieved as the
result of haM work and college
studies in my spare time over a
period of more than four years.
Now that I have at last arrived
somewhere and can give my
family some attention to make
up for the years of neglect, I
find that my wife no longer re
sponds to my affection. In short,
I seem to be unable to recapture
that which I once ignored in my
concentration on paying ' the
family bills and getting ahead.
I would do anything to induce
my wife to feel for me as she did
in the early days, when, I must
admit, 'I scarcely valued her
love. I have sought advice and
help, but the sum total of all
this has ' been the admonition
that I must court her again with
patience and persistence.
I find it very hard to act on
this advice, because the craving
for love and affection is persis
tent, but hardly patient. My wife
tells me frankly that she cannot
bring herself to revert to the
status of a romantic young girl.
She has lived through years of
emotional neglect and loneli
ness, aggravated by economic
problems, including a ceaseless
flow of doctor bills for the
youngsters. Now, she says, she
is much older than her years.
Janice I feel as though my
husband ran out on me, perhaps
because he found the classroom
easier to take than the problems
of raising three babies. He has
kept young, but he left all the
aging to me, and he is now dis
satisfied with the result. I wish
I could be the way he wants me
to be. I also wish he would let me
be alone instead of making de
mands on me.
The 'Council: Len has had the
benefit of good advice, but he
finds himself unable to act on it;
or, rather, he finds himself un
able to be patient.
Yet it is patience that is the
key to Janice's emotional state.
She is wrong when she believes
that she cannot feel young. She
can recover from her wounded

feelings and her deeply felt
sense of frustration. She needs
and demands now the very thing
she has been deprived of in the
past.
When the babies were most
bothersome, her husband failed
to give her help and companion
ship. Now, too, he refuses to
give her companionship, except
on his own terms. He thoueht
nothing of giving more than four
years to his studies while his
wife was submerged alone in the
nursery. If he were willing to
give four years to a patient
courtship, it is a fair wager tnat
she would come out of her
"frozen attitude" in a short time.
The only way to make haste
with her is slowly. It is his de
mand for a decision on her part
that makes it impossible for her
to change. If he would only ac
cept her as she is and do so
cheerfully, she would not re
main indifferent for long. She is
not being allowed to grow out of
her frustrated feelings.
