Research Project
In Forest Soils
Problems Slated
Corvallis One of the first
research projects on forest soils
problems and potentials in the
ponderosa pine country of cen
tral Oregon will be started this
summer by Oregon State college
in northern Klamath and Lake
counties.
The two-year project involves
a basic soil survey and vegeta
tion survey of some 60.000 acres
of the pumice soils of the region.
. Information gained will serve
as a guide for developing im
proved forest and range manage
ment programs, since the land is
used for both forestry and graz
ing purposes.
New Information
It will provide new informa
tion on relationship of soil prop
erties and vegetation, tree
growth and yield, reseeding and
mortality, and land classification
and use.
Cooperating with OSC on the
project are the soil conservation
service and Weyerhaeuser Tim
ber company which has exten
sive holdings in that region.
C. T. Youngberg, forest soils
icientist for the OSC forest ex
periment stat:on, will be project
director. Working with him will
be Ted Dyrness, graduate re
search assistant in soils.
Advisors will be E. G. Knox,
soils scientist, W. W. Chilcote,
ecologist; and C. E. Poulton,
range management research
worker.
Woman Held After
Tossing Lye Water
Portland U.R) Mrs. Lucille
Tigner, mother of quadruplets
and five other children, yester
day was charged with aggravated
assault at police headquarters
here, accused of throwing boil
ing lye water into the eyes of a
man friend. Mrs. Tigner appear
ed at the police station volun
tarily and declared she had acted
in self defense.
Willie Jefferson, 49, was m
a Portland hospital where physi
cians said he had definitely lost
the sight of one eyes from the
effects of lye water but that it
may be possible to save the other
eye.
Mrs. Tinner was booked into
jail under $1500 bail. She told
officers Jefferson had struck her
and threatened to kill her.
The woman's 10-year-old quad
ruplets are being raised in Catho
lic institutions.
Jet Plane Crashes;
Airmen Jump To Safety.
Wichita, Kan. (U.R) An F89
Northrup Scorpion jet plane
crashed shortly after takeoff
from McConnell Air Base Thurs
day, but two airmen aboard para
chuted to safety.
The two men, Capt. Noah B.
Gregg and 2nd Lt. Harville E
Hobbs, Hope, Maine, were taken
to the base hospital for observa
tion. They were from Presque
Isle, Maine Air Base. The plane
was en route to Yuma, Ariz.
