Wins Contest Miss Marlyn
Stewart, who is sponsored by

Grass Fires City Firemen ex
tinguished two rural grass fires
yesterday. In the morning they
put out a blaze of about one
half acre in the 1600 block of
Grand ave. About 5:43 p.m.
they were called to a blaze start
ed from a hobo fire at the north
end of Sage rd. The flames burn
ed along the Southern Pacific
railroad right-of-way and the
area covered was slightly larger
than that on Grand ave.

WAC COMPLETES COURSE
Pvt. Jean Marie Moss, daugh
ter of Mrs. Vera I. Kime, Med
ford. has been assigned to head
quarters, Fifth Army, in Chi
cago, 111., for duty. She com
pleted the clerical procedures
and typing course recently at the
women's Army Corps center,
Fort McClellan, Ala.
Miss Moss enlisted as a WAC
in February of this year. She is
a graduate of Eagle Point High
school.
ENGINEER HOME
Sgt. Charles McCallisler is
home in Medford after three
years on duty with the Army
engineers. McCallister lives with
his mother, Mrs. Harriet Mc
Callister, 714 McAndrews rd.
While with the engineers, Sgt.
McCallister served in Korea and
in the states. His company was
awarded a unit citation for out
standing work in Korea.
ROTC CADETS TRAIN
Cadets Jerry D. Lambo and
Alfred L. Leavitt, Medford, are
receiving six weeks of training
this summer at Fort Gordon,
Ga., through the Reserve Of
ficers Training corps program of
Oregon State college.
Lambo is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Frank Lambo, 1389 South
Peach st.; Leavitt is the son of
Mr. and Mrs. Arthur R. Leavitt,

Training ends Aug. 3, and in
cludes use of signal corps equip
ment, firing of weapons, tactical
field problems and defense
against chemical, biological and

a district court jury Thursday
afternoon of a charge of furnish
ing limior to minors.

Second Community
Fair Set at Phoenix
Second in a series of 4-H com
munity fairs in Jackson county
will be held at Phoenix Satur
day, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Livestock and home econom
ics exhibits will be featured and
some demonstrations are plan
ned, according to Miss Marjorie
Hattan and Glenn Klein, county
4-H club agents. Judges will be
residents of Phoenix who have
had experience in livestock and
home economics work. The coun
ty agents will also assist.
Club members from other
communities will participate in
judging of animals and home
economics entries. A similar fair
was held June 6 at Prospect and
others are planned at Gold Hill,
Ashland. Central Point, Ante
lope and Applegate. The com
munity fairs are designed to
give 4-Hers experience prior to
the Jackson county fair, the 4-H
agents said.

Armed Man Holds Up
Woman in Portland
Portland A man armed with
a small chrome pistol late last
night i'nd early today terrorized
two women in downtown Port
land and escaped with about
?6 in the two holdups.
Mrs. Doris V. Pattison, 27, told
police the man accosted her in
the women's powder room of the
Liberty theater shortly after 11
p.m. He took her purse contain
ing $5 and shoved her into
another room and told her to
stay there.
About 2 a.m. today a man of
the same description stopped
Miss Beverly J. LaMarsh, 19, as
she waited for a bus at South
west Broadway and Taylor
street. He took her wallet con
taining about $1 and fled.
