Maxine Davis, a wise and
thoughtful journalist, has just
published a splendid book on the

ment is missing from their lives.
Many, when they married,
thought that happiness would be
given them along with "their
breakfast or a winter coat," but
it wasn't.
Most arm-chair philosophers
have 'preached that the respon
sibility for success or failure of
a couple's sexual life rests
squarely on the man. Especially
in Victorian England it was as
sumed that women should never
enjoy sex, and should not show
either interest in it or desire for
it. For a woman to enjoy sex
suggested that she was immoral
or else not as good as she should
be. This outmoded idea still is
held by some bridegrooms.
It was about time that some
one said clearly that the wife,
too, has much responsibility for
making a couple's sex-life happy.
Many a marriage goes on the
rocks because the woman has
failed to be interested in pleas
ing or satisfying her husband.
She may have been unaffection-
ate or uninterested, or interested
only on rare occasions. This does
not mean that the woman was to
be blamed. When she married,
she may not have been in love
with the man. Her mother may
have said, "You'll learn to love
him," or "You must do your
duty." But in many instances,
the woman was selfish. No mat
ter how good and kind her hus
band was, she would not put her
self out for him, and often this
left him hurt and humiliated and
angry. From talking to hundreds
of women in the office, my im
pression is that most frigid wo
men were born that way. Many
were like their cold, undemon
strative mother who, perhaps,
never caressed her children or
cuddled them or told them she
loved them. Thousands of such
women will do their wifely du
ties well enough, but they will
never reach out to pat their
husband's head, and they will
not bother to kiss him when he
comes home after his day's work.
Affectionate With Another
As Miss Davis says, some wo
men are frigid with one husband
and affectionate and sexually
adequate with another. The mor
al then is do not marry an
unloved man. "Never marry a
man whose touch on your arm
you do not like; along that way
lies a lifetime of suffering and
loneliness." Few women are so
lonely as the unhappily married.
At last, ,we find a writer sensi
ble enough to say that, on the
honeymoon, the bride may have
to be the one who is kind and pa
tient and understanding. She
may need much tact in encour
aging a bashful or inhibited or
fearful husband who, at first,
many not do very well. Brides
should know, also, that they may
have to be disappointed at first.
Many a woman does not become
sexually adequate until she has
been married for months or even
a year or two.
Miss Davis has a helpful chap
ter on pre-menstrual tension and
depression. Many marriages go
on the rocks because, although
the wife is angelic for most of
the month, for a few days she is
"a devil not fit to live with." She
may then be so depressed and
blue that she wants to cry, or
she may be so tense and irritable
that she wants to scream. Her
husband may then be fortunate
if she just ignores him. Too often
she will want to jump on him,
and blame him for all her
troubles. After two or three
days, she comes out of the spell
contrite and apologetic; but dam

age has been done. With each
one of these spells, the husband
may lose a little more of his love,
until eventually all is gone.
Ways of Treatment
The writer of the bpok speaks
of the things doctors try at these
times in the way of treatment,
such as cutting down on the
amount of salt and water in
gested, but I do not know if any
treatment helps much.
In her final chapter. Miss Dav
is points out why in later life
some men who have had a rath
er hum-drum marriage become
rejuvenated by another and
younger woman who is much
more affectionate and knows
more about being loving. As
many writers have pointed out,
when a marriage breaks up in
this way it is not necessarily due
to the wiles of "the other wom
an." Usually what has happened
first has been a loosening-up of
the bonds that tied the man to a
none-too-loving wife. The mar
riage was a failure before the
other woman appeared on the
scene, and this other woman
took the man mainly because his
love for his wife was largely
gone.
Many women past 50 lose out
with a still-virile husband be
cause, with the menopause and
their lessening of desire, they be
