Conlino 'Scared';
Begs OH Parade
San Francisco (U.R) Accordi
onist Dick Contino explained
today a "trembly, scary feeling"
caused him to beg off riding at
the head of a Fourth of July
parade in suburban Redwood
City.
Contino called the San Mateo
County Sheriff s office at 5 a.m.
Wednesday to say he would be
unable to show up at 10 a.m.
to play his accordion at the head
of the line of march.
He was supposed to ride in
a gleaming lavender convertible
wired for sound, along with his
fiancee, Leigh Snowden. She
didn't show up, either.
"Just before the last show
Tuesday night, 1 felt a sort of
trembling," the 26-year-old mu
sician said. "I had to lie down.
It was a real scary feeling.
"Everything has been mount
ing up, three shows a night and
a heavy schedule of other ap
pearances." ,
f'ontino said he almost re
grets having told the truth, that
he was simply too tired to ap
pear in the parade.
"I guess maybe I should have
said I was sick or had'somebody
else call and say I was sick. I
was wobbly and weak inside.
But I've never sloughed off like
this before and I wanted to play
it straight."
In Redwood City, Sheriff Earl
Whitmore, who was parade
grand marshall, angrily canceled
his earlier plan to make Contino
an honorary deputy sheriff. The
parade took place without the
accordionist. I

Top Labor Negotiators To Seek
Troubles in Steel Strike Talks
Pittsburgh ;u.R) The gov
ernment's three top labor medi
ators came here today to get a
first hand account of what de
railed the strike-bound steel in
dustry's contract negotiations.
Federal Mediation Director
Joseph F. Finnegan said he
doubted "very much" whether
he could persuade the United
Steelworkers Union and the
three major producers to resume
peace talks this week in the five-day-old
walkout
To Meet Separately
"Our sole purpose 'here today
is to meet separately with both
sides and find out what are the
points of difference and to see
whether we can be. of help," he
said.
Finnegan, accompanied by
Clyde M. Mills, assistant media-
Indian Affairs Officer
New Assistant Director
Portland (U.R) Herbert L.
Moore, administrative officer of
the Portland area office of the
Bureau of Indian affairs since
1955, has been promoted to as
sistant director in charge of ad
ministration.
tor chief, and Robert H. Moore,
a special assistant, met first with
USW President David J. McDon
ald at USW headquarters. This
afternoon they will huddle with
the top negotiators for U. S.
Steel, Bethlehem and Republic
Steel Corporations.
His Own Idea
Negotiations broke off last
Saturday night, six hours before
the start of the walkout by 650,
000 members of the steelworkers
union. Finnegan said his trip to
Pittsburgh was his own idea.
Finnegan and his "No. 1 and
2" men, as he described Mills
and Moore, are the same trio
which helped bring about a set
tlement in the 156-day Westing
house Electric Corp. strike last
March.
The mediation chief said he
did not know "whether the Fed
eral Mediation Service would
participate in contract negotia
tions once they are resumed.
"Sometimes it's a lot better when
they get together without us," he
declared.
But if federal mediators are
invited to set in on resumed con
tract negotiations, Finnegan
said, he would let the union and

Strike Effects Felt
The action here today to re
charge the dormant negotiations
was the first open move since
McDonald and the industry's
big three broke off talks last
Saturday.
The strike's effects, meanwhile
were piling up in the nation's
economy with layoffs among the
railroad and other transporta
tion service workers nearing the
50.000 mark.
In Washington, an informed
source indicated the govern
ment has not entirely ruled out
the possibility of seeking a Taft-
Hartley anti-strike Injunction.
That depends on "how, long the
strike lasts and how seriously it
may affect the rest of the econ
omy" the source said.
The mediators, after hearing
from both sides, will consider
ways of helping the parties get
together. The mediation service
cannot force itself into the dis
pute nor can it impose a settle
ment. The mediators will re
turn to Washington tonight.
Chief stumbling blocks ki the
bitter dispute appeared to be
differences over the length of the
contract and the amount of -a
wage increase.
