Tranquilizing' of People With Drugs Draws

New York (U.Ri The ever-increasing
"tranquilizing' of
Americans with drugs, which has
been causing consternation and
alarm among medical scientists,
has, at last, drawn an official
condemnation from the Ameri
can Psychiatric association.
It took notice of "the appar
ently widespread use of the
"tranquilizing drugs by the pub
lic for the relief of common anx
iety, emotional upsets, nervous
ness, and the routine tensions of
everyday living."
Medically Unsound
This, it said, "is medically un
sound and constitutes a public
danger." It then took cognizance
of the .fact that physicians have
been used to promote the drugs
to other physicians. Physicians,
it said, should not allow them
selves to become involved "in
public relations enterprises di
rected toward the premature an
nouncement of 'successful use' of
particular products."

New York Oregonians con
tributed a total of S695.600 to
the March of Dimes during the
January campaign for funds to
combat polio, according to Basil
O'Conner, president of the Na
tional Foundation for Infantile
Paralysis. Oregon ranked 25th in
state contributions. The national
total amounted to S52,100.000,
O'Conner said.
On behalf of the 65,000 polio
patients now on March of Dimes
chapter rolls, O'Conner express
ed gratitude to the American
people who supported this year's
fight against the disease.
"Although we have turned the
corner into what we hope will
be the last mile of a long and
rocky road, we still have much
to achieve in the real conquest
of polio," he said.
In addition to continuing me
dical care and rehabilitation for
those afflicted by the disease,"
O'Conner said, the March of
Dimes must carry on vital re
search to consolidate and extend
the great gains that have been
made in polio.
A third major phase of the pro
gram is the training of urgently
needed doctors, physical thera
pists and other experts in the
care of polio patients special
ists whose skills will be used in
the care of disabled from all dis
eases. "The March of Dimes will
keep its promise that no polio
patient will go through life with
physical handicaps that could be
relieved," O'Conner said.

and her husband have broken
up their home after five years of
marriage. They have a boy of
three. My husband feels that our
son-in-law has been outrageous
in his behavior, but I know bet
ter. I feel our daughter has led
him a pretty hectic life and that
she has not been faithful to him.
My husband has welcomed
our daughter and her child into
our home and treated them as
heroes and martyrs, but he in

resisted this pressure, arguing
that it is best not to goad him,
but to hope for a reconciliation.
My husband, however, argues
that he would not stand for a
reconciliation with a man who
has been so unfair to his wife
and child.
I am afraid that my husband
may drive our daughter into
court and thereby cause things
to be brought out that will dis
grace all of us and bring a com
plete and final break of the
marriage.

my wife's attitude. She seems to
think that we should cheerfully
accept our son-in-law's burdens
and do nothing to make him sup
port his family. I have heard
hints that our daughter may
have made difficulties for him,
but I know that he mistreated

thing for his child, let alone his

THE COUNCIL: It does not
help matters to keep a vital se
cret from the young wife's fa
ther. If his son-in-law is justified
in leaving his wife, he should be
made aware of the facts.
It does not always follow that
reconciliation is impossible when
a wife has committed grave
wrongs. Sometimes, an under
standing parent can do a great
deal toward bringing about a rec
onciliation. In this case, how
ever, ignorance is leading to un
wise and dangerous pressures
that may bring sordid facts to
light and harm the child as well
as all others in the family.
Whether reconciliation is pos
sible or not, the father is entitled
to all the knowledge his wife
possesses. Her attitude certainly
does not seem right, and leads us
to question her judgment. It is
quite possible that she misunder
stands the relationship between
her daughter and son-in-law, and
it is even possible that she has
contributed toward the rift
through a misunderstanding of
the facts.
If she will tell her husband
what she believes, the resultant
discussion may bring out and
clarify the facts and result in
something constructive. It is
often found that people who pre
sume the most and distrust oth
ers the most are the least com
petent to decide these questions.
We strongly suspect that her
judgment has been as bad in
appraising the marriage and its
breakup as it has been in with
holding vital facts from her
husband.
