Medford Couple Injured
In Accident Yesterday ,
LaMarr C. Wilkinson, 32, and
Janet C. Wilkinson, 34, both of
route 1, box 400, Medford, were
in "good" condition at Commu
nity hospital today after suffer
ing injuries in a one car accident
at the corner of Thomas and
Sunset rds., about 8:20 p.m. yes
terday. State police who were called
to the accident scene said the
car was totally demolished. The
cause of the crash was -unknown.
Both persons were taken to Com
munity hospital by Medford Am
bulance service. According to
state police, both received chest
injuries and Mrs. Wilkinson had
both her legs broken.
Pieces of Wedged Metal Said New
Evidence of Mid-Air Plane Crash

uncovered today in the wreck
age of the UAL plane.
Two pieces of metal, one a
cowling from a motor of the
UAL plane, the other a piece
of metal with red markings
identical to that of TWA air
craft, was found at the site of
the DC7.

The new evidence was un
covered by a helicopter crew
which made a daring descent o
a point 30 feet above the wreck
age. The helicopter carried Capt.
Walter Springs, El Dorado, Ark.,
and Chief Warrant Officer How
ard Proctor, Kings Mountain,
N.C. They spent about 10 min
utes on the ledge.
Melal Wedged Together
x Spriggs was the first person
to reach the DC7 wreckage. He
found two pieces of metal, and
said they were wedged together.
A UAL official said the mark
ings on one piece of metal were
similar to those on TWA air
liners. But, he said, United air
lines also have a thin red stripe
on part of the tail section.
The. UAL official said it was
not certain from which part of
the airplane the piece of metal
came.
A second helicopter landing
was made and a mountain climb
er, Tom Batson, Boulder, Colo.,
was dropped at the scene. He
was to aid a team of mountain
eers attempting to reach the
wreckage from the floor of the
canyon.
Darkness forced four climbers
to halt operations Wednesday
but they were confident of reach
ing the wreckage of the DC7 in
their second attempt.

Lewis all expert members of
Colorado mountain climbing
clubs reported they came with
in 200 feet of the wreckage
strewn on a ledge of a steep
cliff in the scenic but rugged
gorge. Allen Huten, of Denver,
joined the quartet today for the
second try.
The climbers said they reached
a level near pieces of the wreck
age, but were about 200 feet
under the place where the air
liner slammed into the side of
Temple Butte, killing 58 persons.
Less than a mile away, rescue
teams on Tuesday finished col
lecting all that remained of the
70 persons who perished in the
crash of the TWA plane.
Inch-by-Inch Grind
It was a slow inch-by-inch
grind working "their way up the
face of the rocky cliff. The
climbers made an alpine stair
case in the face of the cliff by
pounding spikes into the stone
wall for footing. One mis-step
meant death for a climber as far
below loomed jagged rocks and
boulders bordering the Colorado
river.
They began the ascent at
dawn despite the desert heat and
tricky winds blowing through
the gorge. By sunset the climb
ers decided not to chance going
any further. One by one they
descended on a nylon rope back
to the canyon floor.
Train Smashes Into
Throng on Trestle
Fox Lake, 111. U.R) A speed
ing Milwaukee Road passenger
train killed three persons and
injured five others Wednesday
when it plowed into a screaming
throng watching fireworks from
a railroad trestle.
A number of the 200 persons
crowding the tresele vantage
point leaped into the water be
low to escape the train which
appeared from around a curve.
All those in the water made
their way safely to shore.
Witnesses said the three-coach
train powered by a diesel loco
motive caught the spectators by
surprise. They said the noise of
the approaching - train was
drowned out by exploding fire
works. One bystander reported the
crowd had been chased from the
tracks 15 minutes earlier when
a freight train approached: He
said they were , warned to stay
away, but returned when the
first rocket burst lit the sky. :
It was barely a minute later
that the headlight of the passeng
er locomotive bore down on the
group in the darkness. Officials
estimated the train was travel
ing between 55 and 60 miles per
hour.
The dead were identified as
Mrs. Lillian Pavechek, 38, Round
Lake, 111., her son, Gary 7. and
Carl Strand, 42, Wauconda, 111.
.None of the injured were list
ed in critical condition.
Portland Lad Drowns
In Diving Accident
Yakima,-Wash. (U.R) Vic
tor Quist Jr., 12, Portland,
drowned yesterday in a freak
accident while he was diving in
a swimming pool in the Donald
district near here.
Sheriff's deputies said the boy
was diving in a private pool
when his hand wedged in.a drain
pipe on the pool's bottom.
He was dead when brought to
the surface 20 minutes later fol
lowing the frenzied efforts of
others at the pool ,to free him.
Officers said the pipe apparent
ly was not screened.
The boywas the son of Mrs.
John Lamarr of Portland.
Guernsey Bull Shipped
Here From Pennsylvania
A one-year-old Guernsey bull,
jointly purchased by T. K. Nel
son, Medford, and Robert M.
Howard, Grants Pass, arrived in
Medford Tuesday from Pennsyl
vania. Nelson and Howard purchased
the registered bull, Wyno Bond's
Buccanneer, from Alvin C. Bush,
owner of Wyno Farms. The new
arrival is a descendant of . the
Fleming herd, which Bush pur
chased from the Fleming farm at
Troutdale in 1954. Both Nelson
and Howard own cattle from that
same herd.

bers of the British tanker "Stan
della" in jail today after mari
time police seized 27 pounds soi
opium aboard the ship. The op
ium was valued at $20,000.

Truman Reasserts
Nominee Neutrality
New York "U.R) Gov. Aver
ell Harriman, a presidential
hopeful, wore the hat he threw
into the Democratic political ring
when he walked in the rain to
day with former President Harry
S. Truman.
"Keep it," Mr. Truman told
him. "It's going to be valuable."
But Mr. Truman again assert
ed his neutrality about selection
of a Democratic presidential
nominee.
On a brisk 12 block walk to
Harriman's home, where he was
a breakfast guest, Mr. Truman
said he took the same position
toward the candidacy of Sen.
Stuart Symington (D-Mo.) as he
did toward the presidential as
piration of Harriman and Adlai
E. Stevenson.
"I want to remain neutral,"
he said.
Asked about Sen. Estes Kefau
ver, Mr. Truman noted that he
had said in Europe that he was
"glad. Stevenson won the pri
mary in California."
Harriman met Mr. Truman on
Madison ave. between 77th and
78th sts. Mr. Truman remarked
to him that there had been re
ports that they were plotting
against another presidential
hopeful and added "I don't do
any plotting."
Harriman told him "since I've
seen you, I've thrown my hat
into the ring. In fact, this is the
hat."

not be around next December.
Green stages his safety cam
paign every Fourth of July over
radio station WKAT.
Green dedicated the Christ
mas music, including such tunes
as "White Christmas" and "Si
lent Night," to motorists who
drive too fast, drink while driv
ing, and who drive with bad
brakes and bad judgment.
"They never will last until
Christmas so I am giving them
an earful of this beautiful mu
sic now," Green said.

irrigation districts in Jackson
county totaled $393,528.51 - and
net debt for school districts to
taled $4,867,972.48 June 30, the

strangled their four children in
