must either have such aid or run
away from home.
We cannot begin to understand
what makes her feel that way.
We certainly do not deny her
clothes and pin money, and she
is far from being a silent mem
ber of the family. It seems that
most of my spare time is spent
listening to her problems, yet
she must have someone on the
outside to tell her troubles to.
I would let her have her way
about this if I were not afraid
that it would be like everything
else we do for her just anoth
er appeasement leading to more
and bigger demands.
Norma Father may spend a
lot of time arguing with me, but
he is never willing to listen to
me, and mother is even worse
about it. She just shouts me
down every time I am about to
tell what is on my mind.
My parents are perfectly will
ing to talk to me about unimpor
tant things, like shopping or
school marks or a visit to rela
tives. But 1 don't dare bring up
the things that are really on my
mind, such as the problems girls
face in their social life with boys
and other girls, or the problems
of my future.
No sooner do F get on such a
subject, then my parents lose pa
tience with me and shout me
down in anger. I feel that if I
had someone to talk to whom I
was not afraid to confide in, I
might solve some of my prob
lems. Some of my friends have
been helped, and I do not see
why my parents think it so fan
tastic to get professional help.
The Council: Norma seems to
be driven by a desire to "keep
up with the Joneses" among her
girl friends, who can boast of
having been '"analyzed." At the
same time she has a real need to
confide in a sympathetic and un
derstanding older person.
It is by no means rare for a
youngster to decide in his own
mind without the least basis in
reason, that he dare not confide
in his parents because they are
formidably critical. This arises
from the guilt sense induced in
the child by sex feelings and the
anxieties of youth.
The best way for the parents
to overcome this problem is to
take the initiative by confiding
to the child some of their own
recollections of their youth. Nor
ma obviously fears her parents'
censure because of her own guilt
feelings. Once the parents suc
ceed in convincing Norma that
her problems are natural ones,
not at all strange to their own
experience, they will have given
her both a new sense of security
and a feeling of closeness to her
parents.
Norma does not need a psycho
analyst because her problem is
simple and clear. She needs to
overcome the guilt feeling that
makes her afraid of confiding in
her parents. Of course, if the
parents find themselves unable
to win Norma's confidence, they
should encourage her to find
another reliable confidant. A
psychoanalyst could help, but so
could any responsible and intelli
gent adult in whom she would be
willing to confide.

Is there a career girl in your

This and That
On this base, as elsewhere in
the Air Force, airmen young
and old are encouraged to go to
the chaplain nearest to their
faith for guidance.
"Some of them are just plain
lonesome, and maybe a little bit
scared," Rev. Buck said. "We
have to pat the crew cut and
talk soft; sometimes tough. May
be take the boys out for a coke
or kneel beside them in the
quiet of the church."
He said the Chanute chaplains
listen in on between 300 and 500
conferences a month "One at
a time."
Groups Organized
"There may be a death in the
family which has disturbed the
lad or young lady. We try to
comfort them,'' he said. "And on
the human side, we have organ
ized the various religious groups
to collect funds and clothing for
the destitute in places like Egypt
and Korea."
The men of God in uniform
also try to see that the folks on
the base have decent entertain
ment. Some like classical and
sacred concerts in between the
music from the hills and the
rock and roll that comes out of
hot trumpets and bull fiddles.
."What I would like to point
out," Rev. Buck said, "is that
we are finding there is a grow
ing interest among all the mili
tary in the spiritual life. For
that I am very happy."
For instance, the reverend
said, a young man came to him
not long ago and said he hadn't
heard from his mother for some
time.
"I asked him if he had writ
ten to his mom," Rev. Buck said.
"The boy said he guessed he had
forgotten. He wrote and I read
the letter and he-told his mom
about the services at chapel and
the mother wrote right back."
