ing to convert the Screen Writers
Guild into "an instrument of
Communist power."
The Hollywood Ten'
From this beginning came the
investigation of a parcel of
movie people who came to be
known as "the Hollywood ten."
Lawson was No. 1 in all respects
with a party line and Communist
front record : as lone as your
arm. Moffitt told the committee
Lawson had been sent to Holly
wood years before by the Com
munist Party to organize the
movies.
The committee had spotted
Lawson back there in 1944, and
in a report on revolutionary
theater operations, it had said
this about Communist penetra
tion: 'The first manifestation, the
Workers Drama League, was
founded in 1926 in New York.
Among its chief sponsors were
Michael Gold, Daily , Worker
columnist, and John Howard
Lawson, whose opinions have
been frankly proclaimed as fol
lows:
" 'As for myself, I do not hesi
tate to say that it was my aim
to present the Communist posi
tion.' "

wood friends refused to answer
committee questions. Their em
ployers fired them. They were
indicted on charges of contempt
of Congress and, finally, served
