Lausche gave this hint to news
men as the annual conference of
governors buckled down to busi
ness with an exchange of ideas
about public education.
The five-term Ohio governor
is seeking the seat now held by

like this man who, while they
certainly do not want charity,
are unable to pay a large fee. I
feel that they should not try to
do it. Usually, in such cases, a
kindly surgeon will help by par
ing down his fee so that it will
better fit the size of the person's
purse. In some large cities there
are clinics in which a patient can
pay as much for his care as he
can afford. In every city there
are kindly surgeons who will op
erate on poor children for noth-

I will never forget years ago,
on the day before t,nristmas
stepping into a hospital room to
see a natient who. ten days pre
viously, had been operated on by
a kindlv surgeon. A frail little

largely dependent on her none-too-strong
older sister, an assist
ant librarian.

perhaps some little thing like

upon meddling in the affairs of
our son and daughter-in-law,
and I am greatly afraid of the
consequences. They are newly-
weds and but recently returned
Irom their honeymoon. We gave
a party for them and invited
some of our friends and some of
their friends. There was drink
ing, and our daughter-in-law
may have had too much. I walk
ed into a room and she seemed
to be carrying on rather stupid
ly with another man, although
there were other people in the
room at the time.
I did not say anything, but
hoped my intrusion would cause
the little group to disperse and
bring the girl to her senses. I
left and looked in again a little
later, but the same group was
there, behaving like a lot of
juveniles, with much kissing
and petting.
Our son probably was aware
of what was going on and prob
ably deeply hurt, for he man
aged to keep away from that
room. My wife insists that we
must talk about this with our
son and his wife, but I think
that would be interfering with
their lives. Since our son knows
about it, he should be able to
deal with the problem without
our interferance.

Aside from this is the fact the
incident occurred right after
their return from their honey
moon. I can't help thinking that
these young people have a prob
lem we should draw them out
on. If we do not show an inter
est in solving their problem,
who will?

The Council: Silence is cer
tainly not any solution. "Inter
fering" is a bad word, but so
is "indifference" and so is "con
doning." People cannot make
the essential adjustments of
everyday life by deciding all
questions according to sweeping
slogans.
At the very least, the daugh
ter-in-law owes an apology for
her unseemly behavior. If it has
not occurred to her to offer an
apology, it is necessary to call
the problem to her attention.
It may be that she feels the
need to talk with her parents-in-law
but does not know how
to begin.
It would be well to .discuss
the matter with the girl when
her husband is not present, and
it would probably be wise to
ask her whether or not she
would like her father-in-law to
be present.
It is important that the mother-in-law,
have an open mind
Ifhe has condemned her daugh
ter-in-law, she must take her
feelings in hand and approach
her daughter-in-law without hos
tility and without condescension.
She should be prepared for sur
prising information. It can be
that her husband had done some
thing to upset her and throw
her off balance. -
Silence and evasion will con
tribute nothing, however. The
girl's behavior was a conspicu
ous affront that needs explain
ing and mending. It cannot be1
put down as an unimportant
incident, since it probably re
flects some deep problem of
maladjustment. It is far better
to look into matters now than
to realize later that timely ef
fort might have saved an en
dangered marriage.

amendment to the Western wa
ter rights bill has been opposed
by the Portland Chamber of
Commerce.
The amendment would have
the effect of suspending Federal
Power Commission licenses on
a number of uncompleted hydro
electric dam projects until the
FPC finds that the dams are
being built in conformity with
state law. The Pelton dam on
the Deschutes river in Oregon
would be one of these.

active features of the proposed
amendment.
