McCarthy Attacks
Justice Warren
Washington (UP) Sen. Jo
seph R. McCarthy (R-Wi!.)
charged today that Chief Justice
Earl Warren has "become a
hero" to the Daily Worker,
Communist newspaper.
"I don't say that he is a Com
munist, but there is something
radically wrong with him," Mc
Carthy said.
McCarthy attacked Warren at
a Senate Internal Security Sub
committee hearing on bills to
nullify a recent Supreme Court
ruling which prohibited security
risk firings in "non-sensitive
federal jobs.
"I think it is extremely un
fortunate he was ever confirm
ed as Chief Justice," McCarthy
said.
He said Warren "had practi
cally no legal backeround" and
"much of his political back
ground was left wing.
Subcommittee Chairman James
O. Eastland (D-Miss.) and Sen.
Karl E. Mundt (R-S.D.) also at
tacked the Supreme Court rul
ings on security risks. The three
senators are authors of different
bills to overturn the ruling.
McCarthy said the court "is
presenting one of the gravest
threats to our system of govern
ment" at any time in the nation"s
history.
"Willful, irresponsible judges
are handling our Constitution
like it was a meaningless scrap
of paper." McCarthy said.
He demanded that Congress
"prevent" the court from
"usurping" legislative and ex
ecutive powers.

The final date for acceptance
of requests for federal cost-sharing
in connection with damage
resulting from last winter's
floods in Jackson county will
be July 6, Harry E. Martin, of

nounced. The practice covers removal
of debris other than sand, gravel
or silt; shaping, grading or fill
ing, including removal of sand,
gravel or silt; restoration of
dikes and levees; restoration of
riprap or revetment; restoration
of stream channels and open
or underground drainage sys
tems; restoration of dams, pits
or ponds; and restoration of irri
gation ditches and structures,
excluding diversions.
Cannery Workers Fail
To Vote on Contract "

nery workers failed to vote yes
terday on a proposed new con
tract with General Foods and of
ficials said they did not know
when the voting would be held.
. Last week when the union
and the food processing com
pany reached a tentative agree
ment that stopped a threatened
walkout, officials had said that
a vote probably would be held
yesterday or today.
Portland Man Held
For Circuit Court
Lawrence Robert Stanton, 35,
Portland, was bound over to the
circuit court Monday afternoon
when he appeared in district
court for preliminary hearing on
a charge of burglary not in a
dwelling.
Stanton was arrested by state
police June 20 in connection
with burglary at the North Riv
erside Tavern.

Hare-Hound
Cycle Race
Set Sunday
An English-style hare and
hound enduro motorcycle race
will be held Sunday, July 1, in
the Applcgate area.
The race will begin at 1 p.m.
Starting point will be about 2
miles west of Ruch. Riders will
be assessed an entry fee. No
charge will be made to specta
tors. Arrows will guide con
testants and spectators from
Ruch to the starting area.
Trophies will go to the top
finishers.
Riders will tour a predeter
mined marked course but will
not know its layout in advance.
A point system will be used to
determine top places. Riders
will be cleared through check
points, checkers will be all girls
The cycle event will be held
rain or shine. A soft drink con
cession will operate near the
starting point.
6 Ladies Named
To Race Horses
Portland The "Powder Puff
Derby" annually one of the
horse racing highlights of the
Portland Meadows season, will
have it's fifth running, Thursday,
June 28.
Strict regulations will govern
the girl riders, and the horses
they will ride. The derby will
be carded as a regular race and
pari-mutuel wagering will be
conducted as on any other race
on the nine-race program, with
first post time at 6 p.m.
Saturday s feature is the Ore
gon Derby, at one mile and will
match the finest 3-year olds bred
in Oregon, for a purse of $1,500.
Full Field
A full field is expected to face
Starter Gloyd Young, with such
stars as Shareholder, Booter Gem
and Pharsong, who have won
races at the meeting, with John
Sept's Shareholder going post
ward as the probable public fa
vorite. Glen Dixon. 22-year-old jockey
from Caldwell, Idaho, rode eight
winners at Portland Meadows
last week to take the lead for
riding honors. Dixon has ridden
31 winning ' mounts, 29 second
place mounts, and 43 third place
horses.
Rogue Snowmen,
Hold Ski Session
Summer is here but the skiing
season is not yet over for the
Rogue Snowmen.
Members of the ski club and
skiers from Grants Pass and
Ashland, about one dozen in all,
set up the club's ski tow on
Watchman peak in Crater Lake
National park for Saturday aft
ernoon and early Sunday morn
ing activity.
President Bill Brooks said the
group is thinking about skiing
again next week end. He re
ported that there are 8 to 10
feet of snow on the slope. Depth
at. this time of year is usually
about two feet.
