Franklin Carrier Stamp
Valuable When Cancelled
It you ever come across a
lamp with an oval portrait of
Franklin on it, with the word
CARRIERS above and STAMP
below, you are lucky. Especial
ly if it is cancelled.
A friend of mine found one
some months ago on an envelope
mailed at some outlying station
in NewYork City back in 1851.
In addition to the carrier's
stamp was a three-cent, orange
brown Washington item. That
was the one that paid for send
ing the letter from one city to
the other.
But while it cost three times
as much as the other and did a
far more valuable job at the
time, its value today is only a
small fraction of the Franklin
item.
The carrier stamp was gen
erally used to pay postage on a
letter to a post office when the
same letter was to be sent on to
another post office. In the case

It gave me a strange feeling
to look up and see a decanter
sitting on a joist in the barn.
Judging from the cobwebs
on it, no one had touched it for
at least ten years.
"I put that there myself some
25 years ago. "Used to keep
harness oil in it."
"Well, it's a nice old de
canter," said Charles. "Doubt
less you'll want to take it with

OLD BOOKS FROM WESTERN

volume bound in faded brown
wrappers that might have been
new anywhere from 60 to 100
years ago.
"Does that title mean any
thing to you?" he asked.
The title was "Heckendorn tt
Wilson Miners' and Business
Mens' Directory for the year.". . .
I opened the volume. It was
dated Jan. 1, 1856. It was pub
lished at Columbia, Calif., and
there was a full page woodcut
giving a view of the old mining
town.
"All I know," I said. is that
any book printed in California
that long ago or any other
western state for that matter
and In such good condition
ought to have a definite pre
mium value."
"That's what I thought, too."
Jack replied, "and so I felt
kind of guilty in getting it for
$2."
"It even has the correct num
ber of pages," he said, "exactly

delivery of the letter from the
outlying station to the New
York post office.
The Franklin carrier stamp
is one of the few issued by the
United States without a deno
mination. The only suggestion
on it that it sold for one cent
is that the words CARRIERS
and STAMP are set off on either
side by a star in parenthesis.
Color of the (tamp is blue on
rose, usually a dull blue.
Unused, its value is only $100
as against $250, according to
Scott's Specialized Catalogue.
But if it happens to be on an
envelope that has been cancel
led, itself, so that the two are
"tied" together, that is another
matter.
In my friend's case the value
was $754 of which $4 was for
the three-cent stamp and the
balance for the "tied in" one-
cent carrier.
HAVE VALUE TO SOMEONE
The body of the decanter was
ornamented with a leaf motif.
Midway about it wound two
snakes which entwined much as
those on the traditional staff
of Hippocrates do.
I turned the piece upside
down to see if there was any
indication as to the maker.
There was none, though I later
learned that it had been made
at Sandwich.
As for its value, it wasn't as
much as I had thought it would
be, but it was still worthwhile,
especially as a find. It readily
sells in the $45 to $65 price
range.
STATES HAVE GOOD VALUE
had to go down to Los Angeles,
and while I was there I took it
into a bookstore to see what
kind of an offer I'd get.
"The buyer looked through
it carefully, his face becoming
more impassive by the minute.
Presently he announced he
could let me have $10 for it.
He was sorry he couldn't give
me more, but there was so little
demand for it.
"That was indication enough
for me. Without further delay
I hurried to the public library
where I looked it up in their
rare book section.
"It was quite understandable
that there should be little de
mand for the book. Only seven
copies of it were known at the
time.
"As for its value, the latest
sales price I could find for it
was $300. But even that's no
indication, because since word
has got around that I have a
copy, I've been offered $400 for
it."

issue will be ineffective if the
Democrats try to exploit it
against President Eisenhower in
the 1956 campaign.
Hall met with newsmen dur
ing a break in an all-day meet
ing of the GOP Arrangements
Committee to complete plans for
the Republican National Con
vention beginning Aug. 20 in
San Francisco.
He said it is "not news' that
the Democrats are trying to em
phasize Mr. Eisenhower's heart
attack and recent operation as a
campaign issue.
"It's apparent," he said, "they
have been trying to find an is
sue for the past two years and
haven't found one."

Toll Seen for 1956

authorities Friday that Oregon's i
1956 polio toll may be cut about I
50 per cent below the average
of the past several years if Salk
vaccinations continue at present
high leyels.
Dr. S. G. Babson, chairman of
the state polio vaccine advisory
committee, and Dr. Harold M.
Erickson, state health officer,
made the prediction in a letter
to Oregon physicians.
If the prediction is correct,
Oregon can expect about 140
cases of paralytic polio this year
