Maj. Gen. Joseph H. Hicks,
head of Civil Defense of Jack
son county showed pictures and
talked on civil defense in Eagle
Point Grange hall June 19.

civil defense, L. G. (Shy) Morth
land, was also present, and add
ed a few words of comment.
General Hicks complimented
the CD units at Shady Cove,
Rogue River and Central Point,
saying what fine active volun
teers they had.
Gold Hill and Jacksonville
also came in for a word of
praise. He said that Eagle Point
had the potential for a good
unit, but so far had been in
active. His talk was intended
to arouse people to do some
thing about civil defense in
Eagle Point.
On July 20, he said, there
will be a 15-minute radio pro
gram on civil defense. On Sat
urday, July 21, civil defense
will use Crater High school as
headquarters for the registra
tion of all motorists using High
way 99, by way of a practice
session for volunteer CD work
General Hicks said everyone
in the area should keep at least
a 10-day food supply on hand
at all times. In case of attack,
everything in way of food, gas
and all supplies, will be auto
matically frozen at the source
until thing3 can be clarified,
and rationing again put into
effect.
Grange opened at 9:15 p.m.
Visitors present were Mr. and
Mrs. Olin Poe, Myrtle Hixon
and Christine Densmore, all of
Phoenix Grange, and Mr. and
Mrs. L. G. Morthland.
Mrs. Poe, district chairman
for HEC was escorted to tlie
master's station. All visitors
were called upon to speak be
fore the close, of Grange.
. Secretary Agnes Hubbell
showed the pennant the Grange
was awarded for all-dues-paid.
She said this was the last year
pennants were to be awarded.
Grant Hubbell, alternate dele
gate, reported on State Grange
convention. He said next year
they meet at Bend. They visited
a pea cannery on the trip, and
he said next meeting he would
tell about that.
Two juvenile Grange scholar
ships were voted on, for sum
mer camp.
A rummage sale will be held
by HEC Sept. 8.
The rug display was colorful
and a wide variety of styles
was shown.
Next meeting is potluck din
ner, ine display tor next time,
July 3, will be weeds. Members
are encouraged to bring "harm
ful weeds for C. B. Cordy to
identify, and tell how to control.

per cent greater than is that of
a non-diabetic woman. The
chances of her child's dying in
the womb, or during labor, or
shortly after birth add up to 20
per cent, instead of the usual 3

gers facing her, a young diabetic
woman when pregnant has less

Post Gets Building
Ashland A new "skywatch"
post, for use by the Ground
Observer Corps, will be finished
here this week. It is located on
Homes avenue, and is being do
nated by the Oddfellows lodge
and local merchants, with the
Radio club furnishing the land.
The building has two floors,
a ground floor for storage, and
a second floor and catwalk for
observation.
Thirty-six volunteer observers
serve the post, and Lydia Crow
son is chief observer. The GOC
has appealed for many additional
volunteer observers, as the post
has only about half enough to
man it as it should. '
The present GOC post is in
a city-owned building.

Her non-diabetic sister has an
86.5 per cent chance of bearing
a living child.
Another problem that faces
the diabetic mother is that her
baby has three times the usual
chance of having some congeni
tal malformation. Before the
coming of insulin, women suffer
ing from severe diabetes rarely
became pregnant, and when
they did do so, in half of the
cases either the mother or the
child failed to survive. But even
with insulin to help her, the
pregnant diabetic woman needs
a great deal of pre-natal care.
It must be highly expert care if
she is to bear a living infant. If
she lives in a good-sized city her
obstetrician probably will want
to get help from an expert in the
field of diabetes.
AN OLD MAN GIVES
GOOD ADVICE ,
A man who recently celebrat
ed his 100th birthday wrote me
his explanation for having Bred
so long. He said he had been
happy most of his life because
he had avoided worry. He thinks
worry causes more unnecessary
unhappiness than any other bad
habit. He says worry can cause
ill health, a poor appetite, a bad
digestion, poor sleep, and per
haps a shortened life.
He said, "I was born in a tent
next to a tar-paper shack. Later,
my parents moved into a log
house. In my youth I traveled
by ox-team and covered wagon;
now I go by automobile and air
plane. The only thing that
hasn't changed in all these years
is humanity. In all my hundred
years people do not seem to
have changed a bit." '
I like this man's statement
that, "I have never met a human
being whom I could not like for
some attribute," and "I will nev
er be able to repay all the kind
nesses my friends have shown
me." This last sentence makes
me think of what I said a while
ago to my dear old teacher, Dr.
Langley Porter, Dean of the
medical profession in San Fran
cisco. Reminding him of the
many Mnd things he had don
to help me when I was recently
out of college and short of funds,
I said, "I cannot give you any
thing now except the affection
of an old student, but I can
sometimes help a young doctor
to get started, and in doing that.
I am giving thanks for what you
did for me.'.'
