Popular Chest Spreads
This cheese spread is tremen
dously popular as appetizer with
beverage of any kind. Serve on
an assortment of crisp crackers,
small slices of rye bread or thin
a bit with a little light cream and
use as a "dunk" for crackers,
potato chips or corn chips.
In a bowl, combine 12 ounces
(IVi cups) creamed cottage
cheese, two ounces blue cheese,
one teaspoon Worcestershire
sauce and one half teaspoon
scraped onion. Beat or otherwise
blend thoroughly. Some cooks
put ingredients through a sieve
and blend with a wooden spoon
until smooth. Chill in refrigera
tor until serving time.
Blue cheese nuggets are a fine
party item. Recipe will make 18
nuggets for offering on small
wooden picks. Blend three ounce
cream cheese, one ounce blue
cheese and a dash of Worcester
shire: chill, roll lnto-half-inch
balls, then roll balls in finely
crushed potato chips or corn
chips.
Carrot Soup
Plentiful, flavorful, colorful
carrots make a delicious, attrac
tive, satisfying soup. Cook two
tablespoons finely chopped onion
in two tablespoons butter or
margarine for a few minutes.
Blend in two tablespoons flour.
Add one quart hot milk and one
cup grated raw carrots salt and
pepper to taste. Cook, stirring
frequently until carrots are tend
er. Four servings.

Trouble Shooter Sent to Ankara

its top trouble shooters to An
kara where Turkish opposition
has forced eleventh-hour post
ponement of a new government
plan to offer self-rule to Cyprus.
Informed sources said Gen.
Sir Gerald Templer, chief of the
Imperial General staff, would be
entrusted with the delicate mis
sion. He will fly first to the em
battled island colony itself be
fore proceeding to the Turkish
capital.
At the same time it was re
ported that Sir John Harding,
governor of Cyprus, will fly
back to the island "within a few
days." Diplomatic quarters be
lieved that this means his three
weeks of negotiations were near
ly complete and that he would
have a new plan when hi ra-i
turned.
Informed sources said Britain
was especially anxious to get its
new Cyprus plan working be
fore Dmitri Shepilov, the tour
ing Soviet foreign minister, vis
its Athens next week. The So
viet Union has not projected it
self into the Cyprus dispute but
Britain fears it will in an at
tempt to wreck the NATO rela
t i o n s between Turkey and
Greece.
Many sightseers in Washing
ton, D.C., ride the elevator up

Boy's Confession
Of Murder Rejected
Washington (U.R) Police
Thursday night rejected the con
fession of a 16-year-old boy that
he murdered two teen-aged girls
in a nearby Maryland park a
year ago.
Prince Georges Police Chief
George Panagolis said the youth,
Donald Wayne Davis, Hillside,
Md., lied when he confessed to
the rifle-slaying of Nancy Shorn-
ette, 16, and Michael Ann Ryan,

The girls were shot as they
walked through Northwest
Branch Park near the Univer
sity of Maryland on their way
to school June 15, 1955. Police
have questioned more than 3,000
persons in connection with the
baffling crime.
Feeding the Family

ing boys and girls. Cook two
cups diced potatoes and one
small sliced onion in boiling wa
ter until soft. Put through a
ricer or mash slightly. Cut two
frankfurters Into one - quarter
inch slices; add frankfurters,
salt, pepper and two cups of
milk to potato mixture. Heat
thoroughly, garnish with dash of
finely chopped parsley and
serve. Four servings. For va
riety, salami or other luncheon
meat, cut in pieces, may be used
instead of franks. Or sprinkle
with chopped cooked ham or
with cooked sausage meat that
has been fried crisp, then crum
bled. Creamed Dried Beef
If you've not had creamed
dried beef on toast or on waffles
recently, here's a treat for the
family. Good for breakfast,
lunch or supper.
Separate one - quarter pound
thinly sliced dried beef into fair
ly small pieces and fry in three
tablespoons butter or margarine
until meat curls slightly. Sprin
kle with three tablespoons flour;
gradually add three cups cold
milk while heating slowly and
stirring constantly until smooth
and thickened. Six servings but
our guess is that it will serve
three persons, so plan according
ly. '
Cheese Fondue
Here milk and cheese combine
in the simplest of all fondue rec
ipes; packed with good nutri
tion, good eating.
Beat four eggs well. Mix two
cups hot milk, two cups soft
bread crumbs, one -half pound
finely cut cheese (two cups), one
tablesDoon butter and dash of
salt. Stir this mixture into the
beaten eggs. Pour into a well
greased shallow pan and bake
in a moderate oven for about 25
minutes or until set and lightly
browned on top. Serve at once.
Six servings.
White Sauce Reminders
There's good nutrition in
white sauce which combines
milk and butter with a bit of
flour for use in ways beyond
numbering. Everyone knows how
to make white sauce so we're
going to remind you only of good
nutritious uses:
Thin white sauce is ideal for
soups.
Thin and medium white sauces
are used for cream soup, gravy,
creamed and scalloped vegeta
bles, hard-cooked eggs and prac
tically any cooked fish or meat.
Thick white sauce makes a
binder for croquettes, souffles.
Milk gravy is just white sauce
made with pan drippings from
meat instead of butter.
Cheese Dessert Tray usually
features fingers or cubes of
tangy blue cheese, triangles of
Camembert, scarlet-coated half
moons made by slicing down
through a Gouda. Fruit assort
ment and crackers usually are
accompaniments.
Markets Offer Good Buys
With milk production at the
year's highest levels, we find an
abundance of cottage cheese for
frequent offering on family
menus "as is" and in combina
tion with seasonal tomatoes, cu
cumbers, green "peppers, shred
ded lettuce as well as with ber
ries and fresh, frozen or canned
fruits. Plentiful sour cream has
been growing in popularity right
along: is superb with fruits and
berries. Sour cream simply sea
soned or in combination with
mayonnaise goes into and onto
many greens and mixed vegetaT
ble salads; tops tomato soup.
Cheddar cheese is a good buy,
chock full of high quality pro
tein for making of main dishes.
Remember to step up the milk
order now that the children are
not getting that extra milk at
school. Give the family ice cold
buttermilk to drink for a change.
Step up family nutrition by add
ing non-fat dry milk to soups,
main dishes, baked items. Ice
Cream, of course!
Poultry Plentiful!. Broilers
and fryers will tempt many
shoppers as markets offer spe
cials. Stock the home freezer;
keep plenty of poultry handy for
good eating, broiled or fried, hot
or cold. There's no finer supper
eating than cold fried chicken
with bread, butter and cucumber
sandwiches.
Beef Continues Abundant.
Again we say, make the most of
the high quality beef offered
right now at reasonable cost
with genuine bargains on ground
hamburger - types and stewing
beef. Prices on other meat is
edging up. Watch for cured pork
specials which are less frequent
now.
Eggs of all grades are very
good buys. Give Father and the
boys two eggs at breakfast; make
an angelfood or other egg-rich
cake for a change. Hard-cook a
half dozen and fix deviled eggs
for a fine salad. Remember,
Grade A eggs for "eating"; grade
Bs for ingredient uses such as
cakes, meat loaves, etcetera.
