Piano Still Reigns
As Infrumenl King
Chicago flJ.R) In an age of
electronics, the piano still reigns
as the king of musical instru
ments. And it is virtually the
same In mechanical principle to
day as it was two centuries ago.
Today's piano, with its 25,000
contact points and 8,000 moving
parts, is a direct descendant of
three older instruments, the
harpsichord, the clavichord and
the dulcimer.
According to the American
Music Conference, the harpsi
chord flourished from the 15th
to the 18th centuries. Theclavi
chord was popular in 18th cen
tury Europe. Both instruments
produced all tones at about the
same inflexible level of volume.
The tone faded at a distance
of about 10 feet.
The dulcimer dates back to
ancient Asia, according to mu
sical historians.
The Pianoforte
A wooden board with strings.
R was played with wooden mal
lets and was Introduced into
Europe about the 17th century.
It had the advantage of produc
ing loud or soft tones, controlled
by the degree of force with
which the musician struck the
strings.
- Most ' authorities agree that
the piano was invented, in 1709
by an Italian harpsichord maker
named Bartolommeo Cristofori.
Cristofori's first piano was a
combination harpsichord, clavi
chord and dulcimer and could
be played both loudly and soft
ly. It was called pianoforte,
meaning soft and loud.
By 1830, the modern piano
had evolved, although improve
ments were made from time to
time.
A piano frame today supports
a total string pull of about 35,
000 pounds, more than 17 tons.
The American Music Confer
ence estimated that 20,000,000
Americans play the piano for
their own enjoyment and relaxation.

Ashland Voles to
Suspend License
Ashland The Ashland city
rniincil this week voted to sus
pend for 90 days the card table
license held by Gene Seitz, pro
prietor of the Log Cabin, if the
citr attronev determines it is
legal under city ordinances.
Harry Morris, chairman of the
police committee, suggested the
move as a result of a raid and
arrests made in connection with
an illegal card game at the Log
Cabin recently. .
Morris' motion would permit
Seitz to re-apply for the license
if he desired after the suspension
period. However, City Attorney
Harry Skerry questioned the le
gality of the motion because he
could not recall provisions in
the ordinance for revoking such
license for gambling because H
was not a gambling ordinance,
but a license for recreational
purposes.
Skerry suggested he be given
an opportunity to check the
ordinance.
The council voted to suspend
the license if permitted under
the ordinance.
