county, is one of 4,714 operation
independent telephone com
panies in the United States and
its territories and possessions.
The United States Independ
ent Telephone association re
cently published a pamphlet of
facts on the independents in the
telephone industry. Delman O.
Hood, president of Columbia, is
a director of the USITA. j

With its California subsidiary,
the California-Oregon Telephone :
company, Columbia has 12 ex
changes, about 2.000 miles of
toll line, and 4,900 stations or '
telephones.
In the near future, Jackson '
county subscribers will be able
to dial long distance direct be-,
tween Butte Falls, Eagle Point,
Shady Cove, and White City. ;
Medford subscribers of Pacific
Telephone and Telegraph wiJI
be able to make the same calls
from Medford.

its start when the Bell patents
expired in 1894. At that time
there were about 270,000 phones
in the nation. Since then it has
been credited with development :
of the automatic dial system,
handset phones, and direct operator-dialing
over long distance !
