to see only Americans, but was
most surprised finding French

examining dresses, suits and
coats hanging on racks in differ
ent sizes. What an innovation!
Too Aciir
Life is now too active and full
for most women, no matter what
nationality, to take weeks of
precious time for fittings. In
Rome I had no alternative,
therefore was a wreck having
to spend two or three hours
daily for 10 days at Capucci. But
I needed something new to wear
at the Monaco wedding.
In America I always have
ready to wear clothes, unless
I'm in New York where I have
a real sewing room in my apart
ment. This eliminates the neces
sity of going from one shop to
another. For with the help of a
cutter and seamstress I can
create my own wardrobe. And
what's more, I have a "stand
in" (dress form) for the fittings.
More than one fitting on my real
form and I'm fit to be tied.
Most makers of French clothes
must be engineers because the
designers certainly don't worry
about how the lady is going to
get into their complicated cre
ations. They leave this detail
and problem for the technicians
in the workroom. 1The interior
of a French dress is full of
tricks and contraptions to sepa
rate this and hold up, or in,
that.
Fascinating Gown
One time in Dallas, at Neiman
Marcus. I purchased a fascinat
ing strapless evening gown, a
French model of Balenciaga's. I
had to get into it from the top,
feet first, because the skirt was
part of two voluminous bloomer
legs which had snug elastic
around and above each 'knee.
Had I stood on my head, or
even walked on my hands, I
would have been more decently
enclosed than when standing up
right. It was a stunning gown
but the designer and engineer
had forgotten the laws of nature.
