Mantle Slams

By FRED DOWN
United Press Sport Writer
Mickey Mantle went 18 games
ahead of Babe. Ruth s record
home run pace today in what is
now the greatest assault any
player ever has made on the
mark.
Mantle connected twice in the
New York Yankees' 4-1 victory
over the Detroit Tigers Wednes
day night to increase his total
to 27 in 60 games. Ruth didn't
hit No. 27 until the Yankees
78th game in 1927. Because Ruth
closed that season with 17 hom
ers in September it is not too
unusual for a player "to be
ahead of Babe's pace" at this
stage of the race.
But Mantle's current pace also
is faster than the two sluggers

Yanks' Seventh Straight
With Mantle exploding two
drives into the center field
stands at Detroit's Briggs Sta
dium, the Yankees equalled the
current season high by rolling
to their seventh straight victory.
Johnny Kucks received credit
for his ninth win although
Whitey Ford took over in the
eighth and finished up. Billy
Hoeft suffered his fourth loss
compared to eight triumphs.
The Chicago White Sox re
mained 51-2 games behind the
Yankees when they outslugged
the Baltimore Orioles, 12-8, in
a three-hour and 37 -minute
struggle. The White Sox over
came an early 4-0 deficit to slug
seven Baltimore pitchers for 15
hits including a homer by Larry
Doby. It was the White Sox'
sixth triumph in seven games.
Al Rosen singled home Bobby
Avila in the 10th inning to give
the Cleveland Indians a 5-4 edge
over the Boston Red Sox, after
Gene Woodling tied the score
with an eighth-inning homer.
Herb Score struck out 10 batters
in six innings to reach the 100
mark for the season but relief
pitcher Don Mossi was credited
with the win. Tom Hurd was the
losing pitcher.
The Washington Senators scor
ed three runs on only one hit
in the eighth and ninth innings
to beat the Kansas City Ath
letics, 5-4. Connie Grob won his
second game for the Senators
while Troy Herriage suffered
his sixth loss.
Braves Take NL Lead
In the National League, the
Milwaukee Brave remained un
beaten under Fred Haney and
took over first place when they
beat the Pittsburgh Pirates, 7-3.
Gene Conley went the route for
the first time as the Braves
scored their fifth straight win.
It was the fifth straight defeat
for the Pirates and dropped
them into fifth place. Milwau
kee's road record now is 16-10
for .615.
The Cincinnati Redlegs, 11-14
on the road, dropped out of first
place when they were beaten,
3-2, by Curt Simmons and the
Philadelphia Phillies. Simmons
struck out seven in winning his

break an 11-game losing streak.
The currently hot San Fran'
Cisco club combined the five-hit
pitching of Kemmerer with the
heavy hitting of Joe Tanner to
even their series with the league
leaders.
Heavy Hitter
Tanner crashed a home run,
a double and a single to figure
in the scoring of all Seal tallies.
Mdrino Pieretti was, the vic
tim as the Angels got only one
man to third.
In addition Kemmerer snap
ped Steve Bilko's consecutive
game hitting streak at 24 games
when he handed the big Angel
first baseman the horsecollar. "
Bob Balcena's double in the
bottom of the ninth drove across
the winning run for Seattle
after San Diego had rallied to
tie it with three in the eighth
and one in the ninth.
The game was a sloppy one
with each side committing four
errors. The Padres had 12 hits
and the Rainiers 18.
Tom Herrera, third San Diego
pitcher, was the loser and re
lief artist Bill Kennedy got the
win, also scoring the winning
run.
Mouniies Moving
Vancouver won its fourth
game in the past six by rallying
for three runs in the bottom of
the eighth to down the Stars. It
was only the second setback for
Hollywood in its past 17 games.
Pinch hitter Jerry Jacobs
doubled home the tying and
winning runs. Fred Baczewski,
fourth of five Mountie hurlers,
got the win over Lino Donoso
for the Stars. Chuck Stevens
homered for the Hollywood
club.
Bob Borkowski hit a grand
slam home run for the Portland
Beavers in the fifth inning to
bring them from behind . and
provide a margin of victory
Nippy Jones homered for the
losers as Sacramento slipped
out of the first division.

could win.
Middlecoff, the Tennessee den
tist, was the one who said 270
was the score to aim for, and
that probably 269 could sew it
up tight.
The subpar goal was set by
the condition of the course. It
is under the supervision of
George Fazio, who tied with Ben

title in 1950 in his role as a
Fairmount Park supervisor, and
the vote was that the job was
well done.
Last year there was trouble
on three greens, the result of the

swept over the bank of the small

are in top condition to challenge
good golf.
The tournament runs through
