WHERE YOU GET THE BIG TRADE-
as director of the Farmers Home culture Secretary Ezra T. Ben-
Administration, told Senate in- son did not request his resigna-
vestigators today he never drank
"to excess" on the job.
But he conceded he often
drank "with friends," including
"quite a few people here on Cap
itol Hill." He did r.ct identify
them.
"Four or five drinks wouldn't
affect me at all, spread over a
long enough time," McLeaish
said.
Other Questions Dua
He testified before a Senate
Civil Service subcommittee in
vestigating the agency's opera
tions. In addition to his personal
habits, the subcommittee . also
planned to question McLeaish
about his handling of the agency
and cancellation of a $1,000,000
a year insurance contract.

Boat Speed Limit
Sei ai Hiatf Lake
Talent The board of direct
ors of the Talent Irrigation dis
trict announced today that a
speed limit on boats operating
on Hiatt lake will become ef
fective immediately.
A 5-miIe-per-hour speed limit,
the board said, was deemed de
sirable to insure a recreational
and fishing lake. The limit was
imposed because of danger to
other boats, such as row boats,
and submerged logs.
The board said that back-wash
from speeding boats has proven
dangerous to people fishing from
floating logs close to shore as
well as to children playing at
the water's edge.
The limit was imposed be
cause the board desired to keep
the lake chiefly for fishing and
other recreational purposes.

Idaho. Montana and Wyoming
and the Canadian provinces of
British Columbia and Alberta.
The 1953 convention of the
association was held in Medford.
He said the White House did
not ask him to quit.
McLeaish . conceded he made
a "mistake" in listing his pre
vious salary as $8000 annually
when he filled out a govern
ment employment form in 1953.
Actually, he said, the salary was
$6000 a year.
"How many federal employees
have been fired for such errors,"
asked H. W. Brawley, .the com
mittee's staff director.
"I found out that there have
been some," McLeaish replied.
McLeaish testified that until
his resignation he held a top
secret security clearance which
takes drinking habits into con
sideration. He said he felt he was
"suitable" for the clearance, but
added that "that's a matter of
opinion.
I don't think I'm a habitual
drunkard or even a casual
drunkard," he said. "I have is
sued strict instructions that no
employees of the Farmers Home
Administration do any drinking
during hours of official duty."
Disgruntled Employees
He insisted he followed that
rule himself, except that he
"might have a drink during the
day while traveling."
A witness said charges that
he drank heavily came mostly
from former employees who
were, discharged when he re
duced the staff after taking of
fice in 1953.
He testified that he did not
drink while attending field meet
ings "until the meetings were
over."
McLeaish's resignation was
announced by the White House
late Tuesday. It came a couple
of hours after a Texas insurance
company official testified ti a t
McLeaish once asked if he could
give some government insurance
business to "friends of the administration."
