the association's state conven
tion at Gearhart in September.

Accident Commission
Reinstates Inspector
Salem U.PJ Clyde K. Hill, a
field Inspector for the State In
dustrial Accident Commission,
who was dismissed last month,
has been conditionally reinstat
ed by the commission.
Hill, who worked out of the
Eugene area, was dismissed tor
"insubordination and miscon
duct." However, the State Civil
Service Commission recently
ruled the degree of misconduct
did not justify dismissal.
Under civil service rules the
accident commission does not
have to re-employ Hill, accord
ing to William A. Callahan,
chairman of the accident com
mission. Callahan said Hill was now
employed at another job and
might not wish to return. If he
resigns, he will receive unused
vacation pay. Callahan said. I
Newer Method of Thinning
Results in Better Fruit
Experiments with thinning
bartlett and cornice pears by
growers in Rogue Valley have
found the newer method of thin
ning according to fruit size pro
duces better fruit than the spac
ing method, according to C. B.
Cordy, horticultural agent.
By the newer method, which
has been tried for two years at
the Medford experimental sta
tion and by a few growers for
the first time last year, fruit is
thinned according to size, with
the smallest fruit and culls re
moved. The fruit remaining will not
be evenly spaced on the tree as
in the spacing method where six
inches is left between the fruit
regardless of size. Cordy said.
Although a good crop of bart
letts is predicted by the agricul
tural extension service, it will
not be a heavy crop, he said.
Some orchards will need thin
ning while others may not'.
Cordy pointed out that there
is no point in removing the small
fruit just for the sake of thinning
if the crop is small or fair.
About 40 leaves are generally
necessary to grow one fruit, but
at thinning time if the fruit is
large about 20 leaves per fruit
may be planned, Cordy said. If
the fruit is small, 50 leaves
should be planned per fruit.
Each limb is a separate unit and
one limb will not size fruit on
another, Cordy noted.
Terminal clusters of fruit
should be particularly noticed
when thinning, according to Cor
dy, since they produce smaller
fruit. Clusters usually consist of
four to five fruit and should be
thinned to two or three.
When thinning fruit in or
chards with excessive amounts
of fruit, all small fruit and culls
should be removed but if the
crop is small only culls should
be removed, Cordy said.

guilty to a rape charge this
morning in circuit court.
