Educators Bicker
Over Ability To
Instruct Readers
Moorhead, Minn. (U.R) Edu
cators bickered today , over
whether teachers know enough
about reading to pass on their
knowledge to the nation s young'
sters.
The running verbal fight
broke out among 300 teachers,
psychologists and school admin
istrators attending the five-day
reading conference at Concordia
College here.
Emmett A. Betts, director of
the conference and head of the
Betts reading clonic of Haver-
ford, Pa.-, charged that teachers
are getting gypped in the colleges
and "are taught reading methods
by men who never taught a read
ing class in their lives.
Must Be Democracy
There must be democracy in
the classroom, but "what we
have now is the Hitler-Mussolini
goosestep," Betts said.
He got a quick retort from Dr.
A. L. Knoblauch, president of
Morehead State Teachers col
lege, and Dr. Gloydon Robbins,
director of professional division
at the school.
They objected to Betts'
"blanket indictment of teachers'
colleges" and his charge that
politics influence appointments
in state schools.
Knoblauch said his school
does not hire teachers unless
they know how to teach and
suggested that Betts "take an
other look at these institutions

MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE THIRTEEN
remorse for the last two years.
The long hop was arranged
after visitors at Los Angeles
County's Descanso Gardens
noted that a pair of male bull
frogs imported from France
several years ago were croak
ing love calls in vain. No
American female frogs would
have anything to do with
them.
Attendants at the lush gar
dens then remembers that
two years ago their mates died
after being imported from
France. Don Hoster, a local
photographer, felt sorry for
the frustrated frogs so he
made a tape recording of their
.Jove calls.
The recording was sent to
Southern France where the
particular species of frogs
hangs out. Sure enough, two
females jumped at the chance
and arrangements were made
to . fly them on a Scandina
vian Airliner over the polar
route. It was the first time in
history that a frog was flown
over the Pole.
So over the North Pole and
into California the females
leaped in the cause of love.
Well at least tbey jumped at
the right time since it's Leap
Year.
