Slated for Delivery
Washington (UR) A rev
olution in the nation's air de
fenses will start this summer
with introduction of the first
supersonic interceptor planes, it
was revealed Saturday.
For the first time the Contin
ental Air Defense command will
operate jet fighters that can
climb as high as Russia's inter
continental Bison . bombers and
fly several hundred miles an
hour faster.
The Air Force said the first
squadron of F-102A interceptors,
reported unofficially to have a
speed of 950-mtles an hour, will
be operating in a few more
weeks. It is the 327th Fighter
Interceptor squadron at George
Air Force base, Victorville,
Calif. Other squardons. with 25
planes each, will be activated
this summer as well, officials
said.

Children Who Wet The Bed
Recently, Lt. Chester M.
Pierce, Capt. Harry Lipkon,
JoeDh McClary, and Lt. Noble,
of the U. S.
Naval Train
ing Center, in
Great Lakes,
reported that
recruits who
wet the bed
are not quite
normal in oth
er ways. For
i n stance;
on W.J.

wetters, one in 4 had abnormal
electroencephalograms or rec
ords of the tiny electric currents
formed in the brain. These ab
normal currents suggest the pres
ence of inherited slight defects
in the nervous system. Only 1.7
per cent of 60 normal men with
a normal urinary bladder had
such changes. The normal men
had only a few relatives who had
wet the bed, while among the
bed-wetters, many had relatives
who had this trouble. Sleep
walking -was noted among the
bed-wetters; also, frequency and
urgency of urination. Certainly,
no parent should ever punish or
chide his child for wetting the
bed.
, My own researches have
shown that in most families in
which a child wets the bed there
is at least one person who has
been a bit psychotic, or eccen
tric, or nervously abnormal in
some way.
Mice with a Muscular Dystrophy
According to the workers in
the Roscoe B. Jackson Memorial
Laboratory at Bar Harbor, mice
have been found which inherit a
tendency to become crippled and
humpbacked. By breeding these
mice, the experimenters have
found just how the disease is in
herited. The trouble with the
mice is primarily in their mus-'
cles, and the disease looks so
much like a muscular dystrophy
that students of this disease in
man are now interested in the
possibility of learning something
with the mice that can help hu
man beings.
Fraction of Cigarette Smoke
Tar Will Produce Cancer
Recently, Dr. Ernest L. Wyn
der, of the Cloan Kettering In
stitute, of New York City, and
Dr. George Wright, of the Uni
versity of Toronto, reported that
a chemical separated from the
tar in cigarette smoke has pro
duced cancer on the backs of
mice, painted with the substance
every day for a while. It was
effective in 44 per cent of the
mice, and it produced cancers
also on the ears of rabbits. This
finding much strengthens the
conviction of many physicians
that heavy . smoking can cause
lung cancer.
General Practitioners
Can Be Good Psychiatrists
At a recent meeting of the
Institute in Psychiatry and
Neurology, at the V. A. Hospital
in Lyons, N. J., my good friend,
Dr. Francis J. Braceland, one of
the outstanding psychiatrists of
the world, pointed out that the
family physician can be of the
greatest help in recognizing the
early symptoms of mental ill
ness, and he can do most to help
the family of the disturbed per
son. Dr. Ralph E. Snyder, Dean of
the N. Y. Medical College, noted
also, that since the science of
psychiatry has to deal with the
complete human being and not
just a small part of him, it should
appeal greatly to the general
practitioner. He said that in a
medical school a good sensible
teacher of psychiatry could do
more than anyone to give the
students a fine understanding of
patients as human beings hu
man beings who can react strong
ly to some of the many disturb
ing factors in our modern civili
zation. As Dean Snyder feels,
many fine general practitioners
could add tremendously to their
usefulness and dignity and men
tal stature by studying and prac-

I am reminded of one of my
heroes the late Dr. T. A.
ross, of England who by much
study of the mentally disturbed
patients in his practice, lifted
himself from a position as a gen
eral practitioner in a small town
to that of the leading psychiatrist
in London.
Wouldn't Go To School
I am reminded, also, of the
simple and practical type of psy
chiatry practiced by my general
practitioner father. One day, in
Los Angeles, a Mexican woman
brought in her boy of 14, who,
she said, was an incorrigible
truant. His father had beaten
him and the truant officer had
struggled with the problem, but
the boy just would not go to
school.
My father simply asked the
boy why he did not want to go
to school, and the lad said, "Be
cause, when they call the roll,
the kids all laugh at me." "Why
do they laugh?" "Because my
name is Isabel!" In a Latin coun
try, when a child is born, he gets
the name of the principal saint
of that day; and this poor lad
had been unfortunate enough to
be born on St. Isabels day.
My father then asked the
mother what she would have
liked to call the boy, and she
said, "Charles." So my father
wrote a note to the teacher,
saying that from then on, the
boy would be known as I.
Charles Fernandez. And that was
the end of his truancy. There
after the boy loved school.
- According to the Freudians,
an analyst should have kept ask
ing the boy for 3 years if he
hated his father or loved his
mother too sexually; but my
father belonged to the old-fashioned
school of psychiatry in
which the practitioners do not
mind asking about recent causes
for a nervous trouble, and do not

selection of a national conven
tion keynoter because of doubts
that President Eisenhower will
be their 1956 opponent, a party
official said Saturday.
They decided to wait in case
Mr. Eisenhower should recon
sider his Feb. 29 decision to seek
reelection. Their doubts were
raised in the face of unanimous
expressions of confidence from
Republican leaders that the ear
lier decision will stand despite
