Aid Head Named
The Jackson county rural
school! have a new curriculum
director and visual aids manager
lor the school year 1956-57.
Bruce Hitt, former elementary
principal at Talent school, will
take the supervisor's job in the
curriculum department July 1.
He was graduated from a Waco,
Texas, High school, holds a B.A.
degree in education from South
ern Oregon college, and will re
ceive his master's degree this
summer.
In 1952 and 1953 he was presi
dent of the Jackson County Ele
mentary Principals' association
and served as secretary to the
county division of Oregon Edu
cation association.
Hitt, his wife, and two daugh
ters live at 1521 Wilson Place.
James McDonald, a graduate
of Eagle Point High school, will
assume management of the coun
ty schools' visual aids depart
ment on a part time basis July 1.
For the last four years he has
been a field representative and
demonstrator of Davis Audio
Visual Service company of Port
land. President of the state Fu
ture Teachers of America, Mc
Donald is continuing his studies
at SOC.
According to Alf B. Mekvold,
t county school superintendent,
the schools' pool of moving pic
ture films began in 1946. It has
grown from a stock of 15 films
valued at $800 to a present li
brary valued at almost $10,000.
Eighteen schools participate in
the pool, serving more than 6,000
children from grades 1 to 12.

Summer Enrollment
At SOC Shows Decline
Ashland Summer school en
rollment at Southern Oregon
college totals 418 this year,
slightly lower than last summer,
it was reported Saturday.
Summer students were wel
comed at a special assembly pro
gram Wednesday by Dr. Elmo
N. Stevenson, 'college president,
who explained the 'aims of the
summer session, and the attrac
tions of the college and of Ash
land. Personnel of the summer
faculty were introduced.
There are 212 separate reli
gious bodies in the U. S.

Footlighfers Play

mary Casey, announced his cast
selection Saturday after two
nights of tryouts at the fair
grounds theater.
The seven roles will be played
by McDougall as Billy Graham;
Les Boardman as Matthew An
derson; Louise Burns as Sarah;
Tim Welch as Graham Colby;
Mary Iris Hulse as Janet Colby;
Ruth Kilburn as Mrs. Colby; and
Noreen Kelly as Constance War
burton. About 40 attended tryouts,
the largest turnout in recent
years, according to Mrs. Max
Wimmer, Footlighters president.
The three-act comedy wilLrun
for five nights, Deginning Tues
day, July 24, and ending Satur
day, July 28. It will be rehearsed
on Mondays, Wednesdays and
Fridays for six weeks. An ex
ception will be made for July 4,
when the Wednesday rehearsal
will be shifted to Tuesday. An
extra rehearsal will be held the
week preceding the performances.
Riverside Resurfaced

Riverside ave. from Boyd st. to
East 13th st. was resurfaced with
asphaltic concrete last week.
J. C. Compton contractors of
McMinnville did the job Thurs
day and Friday on a contract
with the state highway depart
ment. The surface was 36 feet
wide and one and one-half inches
thick.
The state highway department
expects completion in the near
future of a rock resurfacing job
on the Casey Park section of the
highway to Crater Lake, a struc
ture grading and paving of about
one-half mile of the northbound
unit of Ashland's main street.
An average of 9,000 earth
quake shocks are recorded in a
normal year.

Three Boys Arrestee
By Sheriff's Officers
Three Medford boys, two of
them 17 and the other 15 years
of age, were arrested by county
sheriff's officers - Friday night
and held on charges of petty
larceny.
The boys are charged with
stealing an automobile battery
from some property on Mud
Springs rd. The case was turned
over to juvenile authorities.
Red Fescue Group to
Get Commodity Tax

commission will start collection
of a commody tax on all cleaned
seed sales effective July 1,
Chairman J. Dale Standley, La
Grande, has announced.
He called attention io the fact
that the tax will apply to sales
of holdover stocks as well as the
1956 crop. The tax will be 410
of a cent a pound and will be
collected by dealers. The com
mission will distribute dealers'
report forms to all seed dealers
in the state by July 1.
The commission also approved
mailing to various state agricul
tural stabilization and conserva
tion committees a letter which
gives reasons for including
chewings and creeping red fes
cue in grasses eligible for use
under the soil bank program in
the states.
Visitor's Guides
In Local Stations
Visitor's guides published by
the Jackson County Chamber of
Commerce are now available in
local service stations.
The first bulletin is dated June
15. In it is information about
Crater Lake, the Shakespearean
festival. Rogue river, and Four
Mile, Diamond, and Fish lakes.
The chamber plans to make
this a weekly service devoted
mainly, to assist tourists in the
valley.
County Educators
Named to Committees
Eight Jackson county educa
tors are among 194 Oregon
teachers named to serve on 21
statewide committees of the Ore
gon Education association for the
1956-57 school year, according
to Wilfred Burgess, state presi
dent and principal of Crook
county high school.
Local teachers named to com
mittees are Kenneth Toner,
Jacksonville, international rela
tions; Chester Squire and Bill
Sampson, both Ashland, teachers
education and professional stan
dards; Mrs. Ruth Dunn, Medford,
centennial action program; Mrs.
Jo Ann Smith, Medford, federal
legislation; Mrs. Maxine Smith,
Medford, professional compe
tency committee; Alf Mekvold,
Medford, school finance, and Je
rome McDougall, Medford, tele
vision committee.
Purpose of the committees is
to carry on business of the OEA.
Recommendations from the com
mittees will be submitted to the
OEA representative council next
December.

Maj. Gen Joseph H. Hicks,
USAF, ret., will speak on civil
defense in Eagle Point Grange
hall Tuesday, June 19, at 8 p.m.,
before Grange opens. This pro
gram is open to the public and
a good attendance is desired. Bob
Bitterling is the program chair
man and arranged for the
speaker.

ception committee chairman.

display table.

Central Point Resigns
Central Point Leroy C. Gil
bert Sr. of Central Point, night
patrolman since January, 1956,
has submitted his resignation to
the city council here. The resig
nation is effective July 1.
Gilbert indicated he has ac
cepted a position at a White City
mill, he said. -
The council is considering ap
plications for Central Point po
lice chief to replace Oran Chas
tain, whose resignation becomes
effective July 1. Chastain will
end his service this week be
cause he will participate in Na
tional Guard summer encamp
ment at Ft. Lewis, Wash., the
last two weeks this month.
Medford Boys Elected
To Boys State Posts
Corvallis Charles Robertson,
Medford, was one of three Ore
gon youths to be elected Thurs
day as supreme court, judge at
Beaver Boys state, now in prog
ress at Oregon State college.
Richard Drew, also of Med
ford, was elected one of 30 rep
resentatives. The six-day lead
ership program, sponsored by
the American Legion, began last
week. More than 400 boys are
attending the school.

circuit court Saturday morning

to district attorney's information
charging grand larceny. Both
Smith and his accomplice are
from Lansing, Mich.
They were arrested several
days ago and charged with
stealing a car from the Courtesy
Chevrolet lot and later burglar
izing the Rose grocery store on
West Jackson st.

Elected Officers

idents last week of their respec
tive living groups at Oregon
State college where they are at
tending the annual 10-day 4-H
summer school.
About 1,900 Oregon 4-H club
members are attending the
school. They live in fraternity
and sorority houses and college
dormitories. Fifty Jackson coun
ty 4-H club members are attend
ing the sessions.
