Redeemed to Collectors
It undoubtedly pays to be
thrifty, but in one instance a
friend of mine found that a poor
follow-through on the thrifty im
pulse paid off far better. '
Back in 1921, when he was 10
years old, Don had hoarded a
few dollars, two of which he in
vested in Treasury Savings
Stamps.
The kind he bought were the
$1 demnomination. red on green,
v. hich were issued by the Trea
sury Department and made re
deemable in either War Savings
Stamps or Treasury Savings
certificates.
Maybe that is the reason his
thrifty impulse miscarried :n the
matter of the $2 investment
the redemption factor. At least,
that is the way he considers it
now.
"Undoubtedly when I bought
them." he said the other day,
"I didn't realize I couldn't con
vert them into cash whenever

It was an old teapot, pewter,
with a wooden handle, and not
an especially handsome one,
considering that the price was
marked at S95.
. My niece Judith picked the
thing up and turned it over. It
had three stubby legs termina
ting in claw and ball feet with
a somewhat Dutch look about
them. On the bottom of its flar
ing belly, and somewhat off
center, was a mark.
The mark was fairly well
worn away. Nonetheless, it was
still legible enough so that the
maker's name was William Will.
Directly above the letters was
another mark one that look
ed as if it might be the head of
a bird.
My niece took the teapot over
to the owner of the store.
No, the owner would not re
duce the price. The teapot was a
piece of pewter that had been

As a class of coins, the large
cents put out by our government
until shortly before the Civil
War are not worth very much,
especially those from about 1810
on.
And so I was not very much
concerned one day to come
across a pair of 1857 cents. They
were both of what is known as
the "small date" size, the one
in which the numerals are much
smaller compared with those of
the other. Of the two, one was a
good example of the regular is
sue while the second was obvi
oustly a proof coin, one not
meant for circulation.
For a moment, I considered
buying the proof. I had never
seen one of that particular coin
before, and it was quite tempt
ing, but when I saw the price
for the pair was $30, I decided
against it.
The regular coin, I knew, was
not worth over S5, considering
its condition, and I didn't feel
that the value of the proof could
possibly be worth the balance.
But I didn't check. Indeed,

I wanted. For that reason I pro
bably didn't buy more. And al
most certainly that was why I
proceeded to forget all about
them until I came across the
two stamps the other day in go
ing through some envelopes in
a trunkful of stuff my mother
sent me from our old home."
His first impulse in coming
across the bright-colored stamps
with their portrait of Hamilton
was to find out what the Trea
sury would pay for them today.
But another thought quickly
came to him that it would be
wiser to find their value would
be to collectors.
There is an almost astronomic
difference.
Because most people who
bought such stamps bought them
merely as a savings, turning
them into the government as
soon as possible, very few are
available to collectors now. As
a result, the value of these SI
items now stands at $125 on the
philatelic market.
USUALLY HAS FINE VALUE
brought to Colorado back in 1860
by one of the pioneer families
of the 1859 gold rush. So far as
price was concerned it was a
matter of take it or leave it. My
niece took it.
"I think it's a very good buy,
Uncle Pinkney." said my niece
as we drove away. "William Will
was a noted pewterer of Phila
delphia during the Revolution
and for several years after we
had got our independence ....
But I'm not positive of the
mark."
The mark, as it happened, was
a good one, just one of many
that William Will used. And the
buy was a good one. too, though
not the find I expected.
For though Will's work is in
several of the leading museums
across the country, my niece
had difficulty in selling the
piece, finally having to come
down from $450 to $250 in order
to find a buyer.
THAN UNCIRCULATED ONES
there wasn't time. While I was
standing there thinking the mat
ter over, another fellow reached
forward and picked up the proof.
With a quick glance at its other
side, and without even bother
ing to look at the companion
piece, he pulled out his pocket
book and bought the pair.
The buy, as I later discovered,
was a good one on the strength
of the proof alone. The catalogue
I had been using had shown
proofs to be the same as un
circulated coins, and priced
them without distinction, as
many do.
But there is a real distinction.
A proof coin with its polished,
mirror-like surface is quite un
like the simple uncirculated
coin and usually commands a
higher price. At least among the
well informed.
In the case of the 1857, small
date cent, the proof is catalogued
at $85. better than five times
the value of the regular coin in
uncirculated condition.

ball Jamboree, heralding the
opening of the Little League
season, took place June 12 at the
park in Yreka. There are eight
teams in the league this year.
Hilt, Montague, GazeUe-Grena-da,
Hornbrook, sponsored by the
Hornbrook Manufacturing Co.,
and four teams from Yreka,
sponsored respectively by the
Rotary, Lions, Odd Fellows and
Kiwanis.
The Little Leagues are com
posed of boys ranging in age
from 9 through 12 years. "Little
Leaguers" from Hornbrook are

Jr., Steve McMaster, "Butch"
Hegler, Ace Cazzolio, Richard

season runs for six weeks each
summer, and provides good,
wholesome recreation, and valu
able lessons in sportsmanship
for the youngsters, besides being
"just plain fun" for them and
for the fans who attend their
games.
It was erroneously reported
in the "News About Service
men" column that Willie Jones
has enlisted to serve with the
Sixth Oregon Marines "Beaver"
platoon. Willie has just com
pleted his sophomore year at
Southern Oregon college, and is
now employed for the summer at
a local mill. He states that he is
planning to enter Chico State
college in the fall, where he will
major in history. Willie has been
an oustanding athlete through
all his school years, and is
working towards becoming a
coach. He is the son of Mrs.
Gladys Jones and the late Fred
Jones.
Guests of Mrs. Mary Kurts
over the past week end were her
brother and his wife, Mr. and
Mrs. Jpme Bailey of Folsom,
Calif.
Several farmers in this area
have cut hay lying in their
fields and decreasing in the val
ue of the food content with each
added day of rain. Those who
were able to get their hay baled
and in their barns before the
rains came are the fortunate
ones. The rain is proving valu
able in getting the second crop
off to a good start. A few warm
days now after the rain would
make vegetable and flower gar
dens "pop," too.

nic in Ashland last week end,
Sharee Walsh, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. L. C. Walsh, was hos
tess to a group of her girl friends
at a slumber party. Included in
the group were Frances De Witt,
Georgene Banish, Sharon Great
house, "Shorty" Phillips, Jean
Plunkett, Diane Childs, Char
lotte Hufford, Rosalie Gagans,
Carol Barnett and "Butch"
Sharp, all classmates of Sharee's
at Yreka high, where she has
just completed her junior year.
This is the third annual slumber
party Sharee has given for her
girl friends, having had one each
year on the day of the school
picnic since she has been in high
school.

tume jewelry was held June 12
at the home of Mrs. Tom Collis
ter. Mrs. Rosecrans of Hilt is
the jewelry representative for
this area, and attending the party
were Mrs. Lawrence Breceda,

80th birthday on June 12. Be

contract bridge party given on
June 13 by Mrs. Laura Swinner
ton. Guests were Mrs. Frank
Ohlund who won high score,
Mrs. Duane Hamner who won
second, Mrs. Dave Holland, Mrs.
Grace Quigley, Mrs. Fred Mills,
Mrs. Lester Nye and Mrs. Bertha
Bradley. At the close of the
afternoon, the guests presented
a gift to Mrs. Winders, who with
her husband, will be leaving
shortly for her home in Stock
ton, after having spent the past
five weeks visiting with her sis
ters, Mrs. Bertha Bradley and
Mrs. Will Rogers of Klamath
river, and also with friends near
here. These three sisters, along
with two others, were the daugh
ters of Robert Rainey and were
all born and raised in Seiad val
ley, and so have numerous
friends in the county. '
Another event honoring Mr.
and Mrs. Archie Winders was a
dinner and canasta party which
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Ohlund
gave at their home .on June 14.
Other guests were Mrs. Bertha
Bradley and Mrs. Grace Quig
ley. Doug and Benny Bennett, sons
of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Bennett,
are doing a bit of traveling these
days. Two weeks ago, Benny
returned to Oakland with his
great-aunt and uncle, Mr. and
Mrs. Ed Whalin, following a vis
it they made here with his grand
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Ben
nett. Then on Thursday of this
week, he returned here by plane,
and Doug went down to Oakland
by plane for two weeks with the
Whalins.
Ward Howard of John Day,
Ore., paid a visit last week to his
mother, Mrs. Clara Howard, who
returned to John Day with him
for a week's vacation.
Mrs. Ernest Pickard Sr. re
turned last week from San Fran
cisco, where she has been for
several weeks due to her hus
band's illness. She stated that
"Ernie" is back in the hospital,
and has again had to undergo
surgery and that he is in critical
condition following the removal
of one lung and a portion of the
other.
Miss Jeanne Dasef of Detroit,
Mich., and Miss Hope Dasef of
Stanton, Mich., were to arrive
June 16 for a visit at the home
of their sister and her husband,
Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Adams of
the Klamath river. The girls
drove a car out as far as Spo
kane, then are taking the train
and bus to Hornbrook and, on
leaving, will take the bus to
San Francisco, then return to
Detroit by plane.

ing are spending the week end in
Dunsmuir, where they are at
tending the annal "Railroad
Days" celebration.
Mrs. S. D. Haworth was hos
tess for the regular meeting of
the Women's Society of the Com
munity Methodist church at her
home on June 14. After a short
business meeting, a shower of
"get well" gifts was given to
Mrs. Ruth Cummins, who recent
ly underwent major surgery in
San . Francisco. Present were

The ladie3 meeting at the
home of Mrs. S. D. Haworth on
Thursday noted the absence of
one important member of the
Haworth household their little
Fox terrier, "Judge." Mrs. Ha
worth explained that Judge was
in the hospital in Yreka where
he was recovering from a rat
tlesnake bite on his upper lip.
Though small, Judge becomes a
fearless, battling fury when a
rattlesnake crosses his path. He
has had encounters with them in
the past, and the snake always
comes out the loser. This was
only the second time he had
been struck by their fangs.

Pilot- of Disabled Plane Waves
Man Clear; Crashes To Death
Birmingham, Ala. (UP.)
A heroic Navy pilot who rode
his fighter plane to his death
after waving a bystander out
of the way was credited Friday
with saving several lives at
nearby Tarrant City, Ala.
Witnesses said that the pilot,
identified as Lt. John R.
Robertson, 31. Birmingham,
first waved one person out of
the path of his F4U Corsair
fighter and then deliberately
nosed the disabled craft into a
dirt street in order to miss a
group of homes.
Robertson, a veteran fighter
pilot, was killed instantly
when the propellor-driven
World War n plane hit the dirt
street and exploded into
flames.
John Taylor Jr., whose
home is one block from the
site of the crash, said he was
standing on his front porch
when the plane appeared at
tree-top level.
Taylor said that the craft
was about 50 yards away

said. "I went in the house and
got my wife and child and
ran the other way," he added.
Robertson had radioed the
control tower that he was in
trouble just before the craft
hit in the crowded residential
section. Police and firemen
said that it was a wonder that
none of the resident were
killed.
