A. Hopkins, of the research de
partment of
the Clarke
School for
deaf children,
in Northamp
ton, Massachu
setts. Some 74
per cent of the
children in
this school ap
pear to have
deafness. In 4

per cent more cases the cause
seemed to be congenital. In a
few cases the cause was German
measles. Another fairly common
cause was meningitis. In some
cases the cause could not be de
termined
Miss Hopkins, while admitting
that experts still haven't enough
knowledge so that they speak
dogmaticaly about the causes of
deafness, feels ft is their duty
to give young deaf persons and
their families the benefit of the
knowledge which is now avail
able. This can help the young
people, especially when they are
thinking of marrying, either
another deaf person or a hear
ing person. Then they will be
wondering if any children they

Of Two Men in River
Oregon City (U.R) Police
checked the posibility today that
two men may have fallen from
a rowboat into the Willamette
river here but said no one had
been reported missing.
The boat was found floating
in the stream late yesterday
he saw two men in the boat
rowing upstream about an eighth
of a mile below the falls. The
caller said he looked back at the
boat a few minutes later and dis
covered it empty.

what percentage will be deaf.
Also, will deafness appear in
the grandchildren and great
grandchildren. An expert in this
field may be abje to tell them
what these chances are.
It is important that persons
who have inherited deafness
know that their handicap can
be transmitted through persons
who hear, as well as through
members of the family who are
deaf. They should know, also,
that the risk to children is high
when a person in a deaf family
marries someone who also comes
from a deaf family. Deaf persons
thinking of marriage should
know that a child who has been
deafened by meningitis or
measles may also be a carrier of
familial deafness. Inquiry may
show that his grandfather or
his father had a brother or a
sister who was deaf.
Man Who Quits On Drug
And Starts Using Another
Ever since I was intern 50
years ago, I have been interested
in the fact that when a man of
a certain nervous type gets a
few doses of marphine, he soon
wants to have many more. If
he gets them, he soon is habit
uated. Then his relatives make
a tremendous effort to get him
off of the drug. But when "cur
ed," what is he likely to do?
He is likely to try some other
sedative drug to relieve his
nervousness or some pain that
he has. and quickly he is likely
to get "hooked" with that.
Again, after great effort on the
part of his physician and his
family he is gotten off of this
drug, and again, later, I hear
that he is taking another drug
in excessive dosage.
What this means is that most
persons in this world can hardly
get a habit. They don't want it,
and will not let theselves slip
into it. A friend of mine, a physi
cian, who becouse of a very pain
ful abscess in one of the sinuses
of his nose had to take large
doses of morphine every day for
6 weeks. The minute the abscess
broke and he got relief, he quit
taking morpinhe, and never
wanted it again. On the other
hand, I have known any number
of persons who in the hospital
after an operation insisted on
having morphine several times a
day long after they showed no
sign of pain.
The important point, then, is
that the strong-willed, normal
type of person with a good, nor-

The other day a woman told
me how terribly frightened she
doctors sitting in the benches
that the child had a fissured ton
gue, with deep furrows on the
top of it. The poor woman
thought that this must mean
some terrible thing. Unfortun
ately, the doctor did not think
to go on and tell the woman
that there are thousands of
people with a fissured tongue
who never come to any bad end
because of it. With time, the fur
rows may become less deep.
The woman went home and
saw her physician who said,
"Forget it: I know of no treat
ment for that, or any need for
treating it." Finally, she went to

but first extracted from her most
