WHAT The "what" in the campaign largely boil down to trees

ally girdling the tree. While they appear to prefer young trees,
no tree is immune to porky's hunger, even species which usually
escape.

Third Enemy Added
To Porcupine's List
For hundreds, perhaps thou
sands, of years, the porcupine's
principal enemies were cougars
(also known as mountain lions
and various other names) and
coyotes.
These two animals were
about the only ones which had
developed techniques of over
coming the porcupine's system
of defense the quills on his
back and his quick-moving tail.
Old-timers tell stories of watch
ing coyotes lie in wait for por
cupines, scaring them so that
they erected their spines, wait
ing for them to relax, and then
with on quick paw movement,
turning them over and attack
ing the soft and unprotected un
derside. The cougar was equally adept
at killing the prickly rodents.
Third Enemy
To these two natural enemies,
another can now be added
man.
The porcupine is one animal
which up to now has been able
to adapt and thrive on the
encroachments of civilization.
Men have placed bounties on
both cougar and coyote, and as
these got fewer, porcupines in
creased in numbers.
It is the porcupine's appetite
which has drawn the wrath of
men. Ordinarily an inoffensive
and peaceable animal, the por
cupine is fond of the cambium
laryer of trees the portion just
under the bark which carries
sap upward in trees and brings
life to the branches. It will feast
on many varieties of trees, al
though it favors some more than
others.
When the animal cuts through
the bark and cambium layer all
around the tree, or "girdles" it,
the life-giving sap is cut off
from the upper part of the tree,
and that portion dies. If the
girdle is low. the whole tree
dies. If it is higher in the tree,
as is usually the case, the upper
part dies, creating a fork or
other deformity, spoiling the
tree for lumber purposes.

a porcupine "girdles" a tree with his sharp teeth, the portion of
the tree above the girdle dies (see top arrow in picture, where
the top of the tree has died). When this happens, the branches
nearest the girdle assume the growth characteristics of the for
mer trunk, resulting either hi a split tree, or, as shown above
, (see lower arrow) a deformity. Trees such as this and the many
others with similar deformed trunks do not make good lumber,
and many of them are not usable at all, simply "taking up grow
ing space" according to forestry experts.

by the report of the state de
partment of forestry last week
that more than 12,000 were kil
led during 1955 in the southern
and southwestern countries of
Oregon alone, but that there is
no apparent- diminishment in
the destruction being done.
Medford Corporation, with
big timber holdings in the Butte
Falls area of the Cascades, and
Elk Lumber company, which
also has considerable lumber
lands, have for several years
been offering $1 or $2 bounties
for the left paw of a porcupine.
Predatory Animals
For the first time this year.
Jackson county has classed por
cupines as predatory animals.
and is offering a 1 bounty.
Later this month, through
the cooperation of the lumber
industry and the Jackson Coun
ty v-namDer or- commerce, a
contest for young porcupine
killers will get under way. Plans
are not yet completed, but it is
tentatively planned to give
prizes for the individuals aged
under 18 years who bring in the
most noses.
The nose of the porcupine has
been chosen, rather than a paw,
as bounty evidence because it
is easier to detach from the
prickly animal, because there
is less meat on it to become
rancid, and because they are
easier to handle, and can be
strung with a piece of wire or
twine through a nostril.
As for hunting porcupines,
those engaging it are warned
about two things, the quills and
the smell.
Bundle of Hairs
A porcupine quill is actually
a small bundle of hairs grown
together in a stiff mass with a
sharp point, and tiny, backward
pointing barbs. When sunk in
the flesh, it can be painful, and
the barbs, similar to those on
fish-hooks, will cause them to
work into the flesh. Oftentimes,
minor surgery is necessary to
remove them. In domestic an
imals, if not found and removed,
they can cause infection and
death. The porcupine's long tail
is equipped .with hundreds of
quills, and he uses it as a wea
pon, although he cannot
"throw" his quills.
' The smell of the animal is
not like that of the skunk,
which is a system of defense
and can be "squirted" at a mo
lester. It is a natural char
acteristic, and is most unplea
sant at close quarters after the
porcupine has been killed.

hide in culverts or among rocks,
but often can be spotted along
mountain roads by automobile
headlights. They are most
vulnerable to a blow from a
stick or a bullet in their fore
parts, on the head or soft nose.
There is no closed season on
porcupines, nor is there a limit.
It is hoped that the restriction
on after-dark hunting can be
eased by administrative action
or legislation to legalize night
time hunting of porcupines.
Some foresters estimate that
if the numbers of porcupines
can be reduced by 75 per cent,
the damage they cause will no
longer be significant.
