Actress Denies
Husband's Charge

star Jeanne Crain gaid today she
was shocked and upset over her
estranged husband's charges that
she carried on an extra-marital
affair with married aircraft ex
ecutive Homer Rhoads.
Her estranged husband, Paul
Brinkman. 37. Thursday in a
cross complaint divorce action
accused his 30-year-old wife of
having been intimate with
Rhoads "on two occasions last
December."
Miss Crain and Rhoads both
denied the charges.
"He (Brinkman) has already
broken my heart," the red-haired
beauty said. "Now he is trying
to break my spirit."
Brinkman, one time radio
manufacturer, also charged
Rhoads and Miss Crain had ro
manced on several other occas
ions "in the city of Los Angeles.
His suit declared she was an "un
fit and improper person" and he
therefore sought custody of their
four children.

their new official flag in time
for yesterday's celebration of
Flag Day. But an executive or
der authorizing the new banner
was slipped in among the first
five official papers Mr. Eisen
hower signed after his opera
tion. Probably because the Presi
dent is an old Army man that his
staff felt it would be all right to
face him with this' relatively un
crucial business at a time when
he was tending to only the most
urgent.
Mr. Eisenhower's illness has
upset a lot of things around
Washington, but not the stand
ing bet between two of the ad
ministration's keenest baseball

eight-hour watches with 24 hours
off duty in between and live in
temporary quarters here. At
least one of them calls it "great
duty." However, he would get
no agreement from the man who
stands out front at a stiff parade
rest in the 90-degree heat. This

Presidents' suite. And, of course,
who knows when the commander-in-chief
might peer out?
The hospital's chief telephone
operator. Miss Elsie McPherson,
says calls through her switch
board tripled when President
Eisenhower arrived. She brought

Portland Collision
Brings 24th fatality
Portland (U.PJ Two-car col
lision yesterday accounted for
the city's 24th traffic fatality of
the year.
Charles C. Ralph. 72, suffered
a skull fracture and other in
juries in the crash and died at
a hospital later in the day.

scientist in an obscure place had
made the observation that
among seals it is the male who
gives with the perfume and it
is the female who is lured there
by. Irresistably lured, mind you.
Furthermore, the female knows

siderable distances, and is guid
ed by it to his loving side.

one-time master of the Oregon
State Grange, who died at his
home here earlier this week.
Hulet, an ordained Presby
