Morrison Bridge
Reopened To Traffic
Portland U.R) Multnomah
County Roadmaster Paul North'
rop said that the Morrison street
bridge in Portland was reopened
to traffic yesterday.
The bridge across the Willam
ette river had been closed to
traffic, its turn-span left open
to boats, since June 1 because
of high water which threatened
the electrical turn mechanism.
Northrop said successful re
opening would depend on river
traffic maintaining slow speeds.
Swells caused by fast-moving
boats, he said, could wash into
the electrical appartus and force
closure again.
Of all vegetable seeds offered
to buyers, radish seeds lead all
other varieties.

EISENHOWER'S OPERATION
Doubtless, many laymen today
are wondering what terminal
ileitis is. why the President got
it, why he had
to be operated

likely to be the
outcome. For a
few hours,
physicians who

have produced such violent
symptoms. The answer came
when Mr. Hagerty intimated that
this illness has probably been
present in a mild form for sev

responsible for some previous
acute upsets in the President's

Nancy I can't welcome his
old girl friend.
Sieve She has married my
close friend.
Nancy My husband Steve
and I have had eight years of
happy married life without any
serious misunderstanding, but
we seem to have one now. I
knew before our marriage that
Steve had had a rather torrid
affair with another girl, but I
dismissed that from my mind as
finished business belonging to a
dead past.
Now I find that Steve expects
me to accept her in our social
circle and treat her as an old
friend. I did not meet her until
a few weeks ago when I was in
troduced to her at the home of
a mutual friend, and I became
aware of the fact that she was
the girl who had been in Steve's
life before1 I got to know him.
I sensed on meeting her that
there had been something be
tween her and Steve, and when
I asked Steve, he readily told
me.
He wants me to invite her
to our home, and I do not see
why I should or why he should
want it. Meeting her and find
ing that my husband wants to
include her in our social set has
made me feel very unhappy and
shaken. Until this development,
I had considered my husband
not only faithful, but sensitive
and considerate. He certainly

can be diagnosed by a roentgen
ologist when he finds in the
x-ray films made .of the bowel
a markedly narrowed segment.
Terminal ileitis is usually a
chronic disease of persons in
their twenties or thirties. As the
wall of the last short segment
of small bowl (ileum) on the
right side of the abdomen near
the appendix thinkens and stif
fens it comes to look something
like a short section of an old
fashioned garden hose. With this
thickening of the wall of the
bowel, the lumen or passage
way becomes more and more nar
rowed and encroached-on until,
as in the President's case, the
residues of food can hardly get
through. Then there is a partial
intestinal obstruction and, if the
person's life is to be saved, a
surgeon must operate. He then
can either cut out the diseased
segment of bowel, or he can
side-track it and leave it. He can
does not seem so now.
Stovo Nancy does not see
the whole picture and will not
even listen to my explanation.
It is terribly embarrassing to
me not to be able to invite this
girl and her husband, who is an
old friend of mine, to our home.
Nancy's attitude has put me in
the awkward and painful situ
ation of having to give some col
or of credibility to some old-time
gossip.
There was once a brief period
of near-infatuation between this
girl and me, and I have freely
admitted this, perhaps to the
point of giving my wife an ex
aggerated idea. We were never
actually intimate with each oth
er, although I must admit we
gave grounds for suspicion. Our
parents intervened and broke us
up before we could make any
serious mistake.
Now this girl is married to an
old friend, and I think it would
be much better to deal naturally
with both of them, than to point
edly exclude them from our so
cial circle when they really be
long there.
...
The Council: Obviously, Nan
cy's version of the old relation
ship and Steve's do not agree.
Steve may not have told his
story well to Nancy before their
marriage, but she should be will
ing to correct her impression if,
as she says, Steve has been sensi
tive and considerate as well as
faithful for eight years. This en
titles him to credence. That, plus
the fact that the girl is married
to an old friend who belongs in
his social circle, should persuade
Nancr to control her feelings,
whether they are feelings of jeal
ousy or fear, and tone down this
issue.
Nancy is eager to avert a situ
ation, but she fails to realize that
she has brought one on. As Steve
explains it, he cannot shut out
his friend and his friend's wife
without underlining scandalous
gossip that he says is not true.
Since he. is entitled to credence,
his wife should not make his
problem difficult by taking a
complicating attitude.

a little way above the narrowed
segment, to the colon (large

segment of bowel does not have
to function, the disease in it
tends to quiet down.
Attack Like Poisoning
In many cases, as in that of
the President, the patient will
have from time to time-an at
tack of what looks like acute
food-poisoning. With such spells,
he may have diarrhea, a little
fever, and pain in the right side
of the abdomen. In some cases a
surgeon operates, expecting to
find inflammation in the ap
pendix, when really it 's in the
bowel a few inches away.
Some readers will now ask,
what is the cause of the thicken
ing of the wall of the bowel,
and the answer is that no one
knows. Some experts suspect a
virus but, so far as I know, avone
has yet been demenstrated.
Some men suspect an emotional
cause, and I have seen cases in

My friend. Dr. Albert Rowe,

The disease was first described
some 20 years ago by my good

Crohn's disease. He has written
many articles and a book on the

answer is "No. Throughout the
country there are thousands of
men and women who are living
