Persons Who Think

The answer is that they just do,
and the wise person does not
have horrors over them.
It would interest such persons
to turn to the Scientific Ameri

there is a story about Lewis
Carroll, of ' Alice and the Look-ing-Glass"

used to amuse himself, as he lay
awake, solving mathematical
problems in his head. As he said,
he used these mathematical
stunts '"as a remedy for 'sceptical

. . . blasphemous thoughts which
dare unbidden into the most rev

which torture with their hateful

Speaker at Rotary
Sees U.S. Economic
Picture as Bri
The economic picture for the
U. S. looks bright for the re
mainder of this year and for
1957, according to Walter E.
Elieson, field executive "for the
National Association of Real
Estate boards, who spoke at the
Medford Rotary club luncheon
Tuesday.
In the address, Good Busmess
Ahead in Building Better Com
munities," Elieson warned
against possible inflation which
might be sparked by current
steel negotiations and urged a
feeling of confidence and opti
mism on the part of the public.
Some dark predictions concern
ing heavy installment buying
should be discounted, the speak
er said. Installment debts should
only be measured by national in
come and percentage-wise the
picture is good.
Estimated Income
In April U. S. income was up
$2 billion, with personal income
for the year estimated at $313
billion, the speaker said. Sixty-
five million people are currently
employed in this country, an all
time high.
American families are now av
eraging four to five children,
with young parents who have
never experienced depression
and the need of going without.
This has made one and two bed
room homes obsolete and has in
creased the demand for all types
of goods and services.
The construction industry, a
dependable barometer of eco
nomic trends, is experiencing a
record year in building factories,
public buildings and roads, he
said. Department of commerce
and SEC surveys indicate a con
tinuation of the boom in major
construction.
Medford and the Rogue valley
are in a favored position in the
bright future, Elieson told Ro
tarians. More and more, industry
is seeking locations on the basis
of "a nice place to live" for em
ployees. The speaker was introduced
by Mark A. Goldy, Rotary pro
gram chairman and local realtor.

Apple Crop Predicted
Atlantic City, N.J. U.PJ The
annual survey of apple growers
indicates the country's 1956 ap
ple crop will be the worst in
four years, weighing in at some
20,000,000 bushels less than last
year's production of 105,293,000
bushels.
The results of the survey were
revealed by the National Apple
Institute at the opening of its
annual convention Tuesday. The
convention, with delegates from
the nation's 35 apple, producing
states in attendance, ends today.
Only nine states estimated the
apple crop in 1956 will be larg
er than last year's.
Early and heavy freezes in
feared he might make a mistake
in English.
A Danish translator will check
a tape recording of Freuchen's
answers and the result will be
announced next week.
