Reputation As Eisenhower Goes in Door
By PATRICIA WIGGINS
United Press Correspondent
Washington (U P) Sprawling
Waiter Reed hospital which
equipped lor very important
people began living up to its
reputation when an ailing Presi

through its doors last Friday.
Before the President had left
the White House, reporters asked
Press Secretary James C. Hager

operating room ready. Hagerty
retorted that "a place like Wal

Move May Block
State AFL-CIO Merger
Portland UR) Possibility
that some building trades unions
in the state will seek to block
the state level merger of the
AFL-CIO in Oregon was voiced
here yesterday.
Volney Martin, executive sec
retary of the Oregon Building
and Construction Trades Coun
cil. said he had heard reports
that some unions in the state
were planning to attend the
merger convention next week,
armed with a resolution against
the merger.
Richard J. Gray, head of the
AFL-CIO building trades depart
ment, has been urging that the
state level merger not be
adopted until jurisdictional dis
putes between unions have been
ironed out.
State labor leaders strongly
favor the merger and reports in
dicated that any attempt to
block it would stand li'.Je
chance of success.
