State Tax Commission
Upheld in Book Study
Salem (U.R) Marian County
Circuit Judge Val D. Sloper to
day upheld the right of the
Oregon State Tax Commission
to inspect the books of a lumber
company to determine whether
its suppliers were paying the
state severance tax on timber.
Pope & Talbot company had
contended that the tax commis
sion was conducting a -"fishing
expedition" in trying to go over
company books. It implied that
the commission was not looking
for specific information but for
any data that might prove in
teresting. The claim was denied
by Judge Sloper.

Reuther Expected To
Answer Charges of
Danger To Freedom
Grand Rapids, Mich. (U.PJ
Walter P. Reuther, president of
the giant United Auto Workers
union, today was expected to an
swer charges made against him
by Republicans at the Arkansas
GOP convention.
The charges were made Tues
day by Michigan, state GOP
chairman John Feikens at the
Arkansas Republican convention
at Little Rock. Feikens told the
convention Reuther's control ov
er his union members was "a
great mushroom cloud of dang
er to individual freedom."
'Master Strategist'
He said Reuther was a "mast
er strategist" who has built 'a
"vast political machine for
which union members must pay
dues to finance the political am
bitions of Reuther."
A spokesman for the UAW
said Reuther would answer Feik
ens' charges today when he ad
dressed the 800 delegates at
tending the Michigan CIO Coun
cil convention here. 1
The spokesman accused Feik
ens of "outright falsehoods" and
said they were a result of the
Republican leader's "impotent
rage over the fact that of his
predecessors the GOP has lost
the support and confidence of
the majority of people in Mich
igan." Civil Rights
In action at the convention
Tuesday, UAW secretary -treasurer
Emil Mazey urged organiz
ed labor to create a civil rights
plank which would cause the
Dixiecrats to abandon the Dem
ocratic party.
"At the Democratic conven
tion I hope we can organize
enough strength to build a civil
rights plank that will chase the
Eastlands and Talmadges out of
the Democratic party.
"Let the Republicans have
them," Mazey said.
Mazey also accused the Eisen
hower administration of a "cal
lous disregard" for the rights of
Negroes and said: "Let's have
a Democratic party based on the
liberal, progressive program."
The convention delegates
passed resolutions calling for a
state corporation profits tax and
promised to help the farmers
gain their economic objectives.
