Families Attend Graduation

Albert Hartlerode spent the
week end with their ion, Wil
liam "Red" Hartlerode and fam
ily. In Klamath Falls, Ore.
They attended the commence
ment exercises of the Oregon
Technical Institute, from which
their son was a graduate.
It was the eighth annual com
mencement of OTI and there
were 363 graduates.
Baccalaureate and commence
ment exercises were held June
3rd in the field house on the
campus.
Mrs. Hartlerode also attended
the Mothers' Tea with her daughter-in-law.
The tea was given by
the Faculty Wives club of the
OTI at the home of Mrs. Winston
Purvine, on Saturday afternoon.
Mr. and Mrs. Elga Abbott and
son Raymond, also of Butte Falls,
joined the Hartlerode families
Sunday morning. Mr. and Mrs.
Abbott are the parents of the
younger Mrs. Hartlerode.
The Abbotts returned to Butte
Falls via Crater Lake, and the
senior Hartlerodes came home
via the Green Springs, where
they visited with Hartlerode's
mother, who is convalescing
from recent surgery.
Mr. and Mrs. Jim Arnold also
attended the graduation services
at Klamath Falls, in honor of
their son, Harold L. Arnold, who
graduated.
Mrs. F. L. Brown was present
to watch her son, Don Brown,
get his diploma.
On May 30, a resident of Butte
Falls, Lafayette B. Preston, cele
brated his 100th birthday, at the
home of his daughter, Mrs. Mina
Wright.
Among those who-were pres
ent to celebrate the occasion
were his son, Benjamin Preston,
and family of Gerber, Calif.; a
daughter. Martha Jensen and
family, of Bremerton, Wash.; a
daughter, Ida M. Tyrell of Stock
ton, Calif.; a nephew. Earl Stock
dale, and wife of Cottage Grove;
and two grandsons, Charles and
Floyd McCabe of Butte Falls.
Mrs. Burell Facey and daugh
ters. Patsy and Vanessa, have
gone to visit friends and rela
tives In Toledo, Ohio. They plan
to be gone for several weeks.
They hope to spend most of the
time with Mr. and Mrs. Harley
Frye and family.
Due to the death of his brother-in-law,
L. E. Stack. Alva Web
ster went to Los Angeles a couple
of weeks ago, to be with his sis
ter. Mrs. L. E. (May) Stack.
Mr. and Mrs. Jewell Reddell
and family of Kansas City, Kan.,
visited for a couple of days with
his brother, Mr. and Mrs. Ted
Reddell and family. '
David Jenkins, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Charles Jenkins, was a
lucky lad a couple of weeks ago.
The Butte Falls town baseball
team was playing Ashland, when
one of the balls was hit up on
the roof of the high school gym.
Younk Jenkins went to retrieve
the ball, and In doing so, he fell
to the ground, a distance of
about 20 feet. He was taken to
Sacred Heart hospital where
x-rays showed no bones were
broken. He was advised to stay
in bed a day or so, and con
siders himself a lucky boy.
Mr. and Mrs. Gene Irwin, have
purchased a home in Butte Falls.
They bought the place of John
Henshaw, and are in the process
of moving.
Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Hodge of
Oakridge, Ore., visited Mr. and
Mrs. Page Stauffer last week
end. Mrs. Stauffer then motored
to Forest Grove, Ore., where she
visited the home of a little blind
friend of hers, Darryl Henry.
Darryl is a student of the Oregon
School for the Blind.
Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Leather-
man of Butte Falls, and brother
Irwin, of Camp Mather, Calif.,
went to Eugene where they visit
ed old school mates.
Ralph Conard, brother of Mrs.
Floyd Mattern, was seriously in
jured in a dynamiting accident
on May 31. Also injured was
Noah Husky, a newcomer to
Butte Falls.
Ralph Conard is reported to
be in fair condition, and Husky
has suffered a broken jaw.
On June 3 a "Jalopy break
fast" was held in the Butte Falls
city park. Hotcakes with sausage
or fried ham and coffee were
served from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m.
Proceeds from the breakfast
go to the Butte Falls Lions club,
which sponsored it.
In May 24 neighbors of Mr.
and Mrs. Charles E. McNulty
called to wish him happy birth
day. Mr. and Mrs. McNulty, and
son Keith, are newcomers to
Butte Falls. McNulty is the diesel
mechanic for Medford Corpora
tion. Butte Falls has welcomed
many newcomers these past
few weeks. Many people are
beginning to realize how nice
our little community is. It is
above the fog, and beyond the
flood regions. Our new highway
is nearing completion, the fish
are biting in Butte Creek, the
lakes and in Willow Creek dam.
On June 1 in the Butte Falls
High school gym, eight seniors
graduated from high school. The
three girls were Patricia Irwin,
Mickey McConochie, and Mary
Ann Wright. The five boys were
Vernon Arnold, Lee Owens,
Terry Edmondson, Dale Ray
Smith, and Jim Berg.
Mr. and Mrs. Louis S. Cram
mer of Butte Falls celebrated
their 25th wedding anniversary
May 27 at a dinner given in their
honor by her brother and family,
Mr. and Mrs. Slim Clason of
Central Point, Ore.
Several cards were presented
by relatives who could not at
tend the celebration, each card
containing a silver dollar. Also
received were a silver salad set,
a silver pie server and a silver
pierced serving spoon.
Among those present were Mr.
and Mrs. Dale Bebb of Grants
Pass. Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Burton
of Medford. Mr. and Mrs. Duane
Burton of Butte Falls, Mr. and
Mrs. Slim Clason of Central
Point, and Mr. and Mrs. Doug
Crammer of Butte Falls.
A three-tiered cake with ice
cream and coffee were served
as refreshments.

a lesson Friday when he fined
her $2 for parking overtime. But
Mrs. Wolf didn't show up in
court, and Wolf had to pay the
fine for her out of his own
pocket.

Former Resident Here Dies

dent, died June 4 at the Portland
Veteran's hospital. Survivors in
clude three daughters, all form
er residents here, Mrs. Clement
Dang (Anita), foster daughter of
the H. K. Hannas, and Mrs. John
Ahuna (Virginia), both of San
Francisco, and Mrs. Howard C.
Grover (Beulah of Coos Bay.
Interment will be in Jackson
ville cemetery Monday after
noon. Jack Keaveny, Los Angeles,
district engineer for Shell Oil
company there, arrived at the
home of his parents, Mr. and
Mrs. John F. Keaveny, last Sun
day and expects to be in Jack
sonville until June 15.
Theodore Johnson flew last
Saturday to San Francisco to
visit his sister-in-law, Mrs. Ar
thur Peak, and family.
Mr. and Mrs. Paul Algeo, Mrs.
James Fretwell and daughter,
Joan, drove to Portland last
week end to attend the North
west variety store merchandise
show at the Neighbors of Wood
craft Building. They also visited
Mrs. R. G. Simon at Linnton,
Ore. Mrs. Algeo's and Mrs. Fret
well's sister-in-law, Mrs Marion
Johnston, who has been living
with her mother, Mrs. Walter
Blair, Jacksonville, left recently
for Tokyo, Japan, to join her
husband who is an Army engi
neer there.
Jack Bowman, third class elec
trician's mate stationed in San
Francisco, returned to his sta
tion Memorial day after visiting
in Jacksonville for two weeks at
the home of his sister and family,
Mr. and Mrs. Ed Paxton.
Richard White, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Richard White Sr., has re
turned after a 20 day visit home,
to Portsmouth, Va., to start a
three year Navy medical train
ing course. Before his visit home
he completed the pre-medical
course.
Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Montgom
ery and two children recently
moved to Ashland to be closer to
Montgomery's work. Their new
address is 140 South Pioneer st.,
Ashland. They formerly lived on
South Oregon st. here.
E. F. Roberson, recently home
from a long seige at the hospital,
is convalescing nicely. His
daughter, Mrs. Ruth Barnett, and
two sons from Sutherlin, Ore.,
visited him last week.
Mr. and Mrs. E. T. Morran of
The Df lies. Ore., were Memorial
day visitors in Jacksonville and
at the Old Pioneer cemetery.
Mrs. Morran is the former Dor

in the present Huener residence.
While in this vicinity the Mor
rans stayed at the Medford hotel.
Mrs. Chet Kamberg and
daughter Valerie, Newport, Ore.,
were visitors last week at the
home of Mrs. Kamberg's parents,
Mr. and Mrs. P. E. Matheny. A
friend, Esther Pearson of New
port, was also guest at the Ma
theny home.
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Glines of
Medford last week became par
ents of a son. He has been named
Timothy O'Neal. Mrs. Glines is
the former Inez Graham of Jack
sonville. The Glines also have
four daughters.

visitors at the homes of relatives
in both Jacksonville and Med

Mi. and Mrs. Simmie Hilliard,
403 Sterling rd., are moving this
week to a new home they have
purchased in Central Point at
315 Ash st. The Hilliards also re
port that they have recently be
come grand parents with the ar
rival of Michael Ian Hoover to
their daughter and son-in-law in
San Bruno, Calif., where Hoover
attends Simpson Bible college at
San Francisco.
Mr. and Mrs. Don Harris and
two children, Mark, and Donna
Jean, are temporarily residing
with Mrs. Harris's parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Albert Hackert. The
Harrises expect to move soon
into their new home which is
under construction on Madrona
lane.
Mrs. Byron Sanford came
home last Sunday from her stay
in the hospital after undergoing
major surgery recently. She re
ports that she is recovering slow
ly but is now able to accept visi
tors and phone calls. She also
wishes to express her thanks to
all her friends and neighbors for
their cards, flowers and friendly
inquiries while she was in the
hospital.
Also returning home this week
to Jacksonville was Harold
(Hike) Purcell. He has been irf
Portland at the Veteran's hospi
tal for medical attention the past
three weeks.
The Valleyview Dorcas society
of the 7th-Day Adventist church
met at the home of Mrs. J. E.
Johnson last Tuesday for an all
day quilting bee with potluck
luncheon. About ten women at
tended. The quilts are used for
the ladies welfare work projects.
Mr. and Mrs. J.- E. Johnson
visited old friends in Brookings
last week end.
Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Rasmus
sen and family returned recently
from San Leandro, where Ras
mussen attended hydromatic
transmission school. They also
visited relatives in southern
California.
Recent guests at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. O. W. Matheny was
their son and wife, Mr. and Mrs.
Bruce Matheny, San Diego. The
younger Mathenys drove up with
Mrs. Mary Markwith and daugh
ter, Lindora, who were former
residents here. Miss Markwith
came up to attend graduation
exercises at Oregon Technical
Institute and to receive her di
ploma. The commencement was
held June 3 in Klamath Falls.

LONE PINE

Grandview-Lone Pine Ernest
Pheister is now at home and is
able to be up in a wheel chair
part of the time. He suffered a
heart attack last fall and spent
several weeks in an oxygen tent.
He wishes to thank his friends
for their remembrances by cards
and phone calls. He is still un
able to receive visitors.
James Archibald was injured
again while logging near Eure
ka, Calif., this time being caught
in the rigging line and breaking
his leg below the knee. He is in
the Eureka hospital. .
Damon Leeper is home from
the hospital, recovering from a
back operation as a result of the
injury he suffered while at work
at the Medford Veneer plant.
Gerald Knight is in Costa
Mesa, Calif., spending a few
weeks with his brother and sister-in-law,
Mr. and Mrs. George
Knight.
Mr. and Mrs. Henry A. Mc
Cullough of Los Angeles, former
residents of this district, visited
Friday and Sunday at the R. J.
Knight home before returning
home Sunday afternoon.
Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Ward of
Klamath Falls, with an old
friend, Joe Kruckvich, from
Everson, Pa., were Sunday visit
tors at the R. J. Knight home.

Wallace are sisters. Mrs. Edna
Raymond will return to her
home in Eugene with Mrs. Wells
after spending two weeks visit
ing with the Wallace family. She
is Mrs. Wells' and Mrs. Wal
lace's mother.
Sharon Isaacs, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Isaacs Jr.,
of the Old Stage rd.. is staying
part of this week with Mr. and
Mrs. George Bourne.
Sondra and Weldon Starkey,
daughter and son of Mr. and
Mrs. Milton Starkey of Salem,
are spending a few days visiting
with their grandparents, Mr. and
Mrs. E. V. Tompkins.
A farewell party was held at
the Clarence Brown home for
Mr. and Mrs. Holley Michael

sister at Myrtle Creek. The Ma
thenys were to return with the
Markwiths to San Diego Tues
day. Mrs. Pearl Kitchen was very
ill at the Sacred Heart hospital
